Austin clearly has a wide selection of fine dining. I need suggestions for the wife's Bday.

Budget 200-300 dollars for 2.

The one thing we splurge on is good food. we like the total experience and one that is genuine. We aren't married to a particular food group other than we dont usually do steak when doing the fine dining. I want the chef to show me how good they are, not screw up a steak.

I figured this board would be able to whittle down the many options in town. We've only been back a few years (wife is from here) and haven't really hit the fine dining scene (3 and 1 year old to blame).

Ok, then I'd go Barley Swine or Emmer and Rye both have James Beard nominated chefs

If y'all plan to have a couple or more drinks Barley Swine will be out of your range. It was close to $400 for two last time I was there (tasting menu and a few rounds of drinks + digestifs). If you're light or non-drinkers definitely do it. You won't be disappointed. Barley Swine, Odd Duck, and launderette are all similar in my book. I'd put launderette at a distant third behind the other two.

If you want some Spanish influence food check out Bullfight. I don't see that mentioned much on here, but its pretty good.

Also, unrelated to OP advise, we should sticky one of these

also a big no on Capital Grille. the one here in Austin is just not up to par for that chain. i won't eat there unless its corporate paid and even then i would rather go somewhere else.

That's a shame. I enjoyed bullfight.

Bonhomie was a solid let down the two times I went. Items sounded tasty on the menu and just weren't that special when they came out.

Loro is great, frozen G&T, )brisket popcorn, papaya salad and the burger) we have eaten their twice but it's counter service so not ideal for a nice dinner. Also Sour Duck is better than Loro at that price point. 100-150. We at them back to back last Saturday (Sour Duck was a 9.5 and Loro was and 8.5) but also counterish service so not ideal for a nice dinner.

I think Barley Swine has been favorite high dollar dining experience to date.

ALC is also good for a low key steak dinner that will make an impact on your wallet.

Just went to Loro on Friday. It's a cool atmosphere and pretty unique in terms of the restaurant experience. You get in line inside and order food at the bar then you go and find a table. Then you have to go get your own plates, silverware, etc. It's not a big deal, just not what you'd typically expect from a restaurant of that caliber. I also found it to be very reasonably priced--we got 10 different dishes and it was $140 including 3 drinks and the tip.

I recommend the sweet corn fritters, the chicken karaage, the chicken bo ssam and the oak smoked salmon. The brisket wasn't as great as I expected, but that's probably because I expected the brisket from Franklin. It's a different brisket smoked completely different from what they serve at Franklin.

Also, get the mango sake slushy drink. I'm not a fruity drink guy, but they're delicious.

You might call to make sure it's on the menu.

Standouts were the meatball appetizer, redfish entree, and all of the steaks. Last time I had grilled prawn with squid ink risotto that was amazing - I think it was a special. This is my favorite restaurant in Austin right now.

Really? That's not fine dining and I was kinda "meh" about it. Many better places imo.
