My wife and I are looking for a local attorney in helping us set up a will and advising on setting up a trust for our estate.

Does anyone use an attorney they have worked with in which you had a good experience?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a CFP in the area and send many clients to various estate planning attorneys depending on their needs. Sounds like your is fairly straightforward, so how much do you want to pay for the package? I've seen from $1,200 min to some in the $4-5k range

Haven't really thought about it, to tell you the truth. I don't have any idea what the going rate is.

Laci Jones is great for basic estate planning. She'll be hard to beat based on cost alone and is easy to work with. http://ljtxlaw.com

Hopper Mikeska is in Austin and one of the partners is an Aggie. They have a good team there. EDIT: Elizabeth is excellent and as their youngest associate is the most reasonable at $275/hour for reference. http://www.hoppermikeska.com/attorneys.htm

Don't want to hijack, but my wife and I have this on our to-do list. Is there any concerns we should consider with doing it ourselves?

Just....dont. The last thing you want to do is make the will yourself, and then god forbid when it's time to probate the will there's some huge mess up that will end up costing way more in legal fees than just getting an attorney to draft it to begin with would've cost.

Tell Laci that Mark Herman sent you...and no, I don't get any kind of compensation from her. FYI the reason she is one of the most reasonable in town is she doesn't have a fancy office and staff etc. In fact I've never seen her home office...she normally would meet clients at our office or wherever is most convenient for them.

Depends on your assets and locations of those i.e. property in other states, large taxable accounts that might be subject to probate, whether you need to consider setting up a trust etc. In Texas at least probate is not bad compared to most other states, but still will delay and complicate the settling of your estate for heirs.

Also keep in mind an estate planning attorney will also set up medical directives for you at the same time.

For some folks DIY is fine honestly, and probably better than nothing, but you have to be careful.
