Have a professional associate who will be traveling to austin & Texas for the first time here in a couple of days and asked for suggested places to get some great BBQ & Mexican food. Told her that I would ask on this board. Any suggestions??? TIA, Cardiac

Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ - Started out as a truck but are building in the Brodie area.

The brisket tacos are so freaking tasty! Greasy & delicious! They used to be right behind Star Bar on W 6th.

However,in Austin,
+1 on Stiles Switch beef rib and Louie Muellers

Fonda San Miguel
Alcomar
El Alma

Tex-Mex:

Always recommend Matt's for visitors. Austin landmark with good food and great atmosphere. If you want to take her to a dive for bbq, go by The Pit on Burnet for chop beef sandwiches.

Opening a brick and mortar on Manchaca right by 1626 cafe. My south Austin stomping grounds.

The line is getting horrendous. I try to only go on weekdays for lunch now.

Hopefully someone else is actually running the business side and that will keep him smoking for a long time.

Have been twice and found Matt's to be pretty overrated.

Not bad, but their menu choices are bizarre. You can't order a BBQ plate like in most places.

Freedmen's is bbq good, but not your traditional BBQ joint, fancier, good drinks and the food is good

Been to Takoba several times for dinner, good drinks and food with minimal to no wait and decent service.

I'd say at least worth trying again, we've always been for dinner. Really nice cocktail menu actually, had a mescal Old Fashioned there that was really tasty.

A few more to add to the Mexican/TexMex list:

- Gloria's in the Domain is solid but a bit more generally Latin than TexMex (they call it Latin and the owners are from El Salvador)

- Santa Catarina in Cedar Park

- Blue Corn Harvest in Cedar Park (sort of southwest/TexMex and really tasty)

Go give it a try. I've never walked out of the displeased. I think they take reservations in the evenings now, which should tell you a little about it not being standard bbq.

Yea, it's a chain but we go for Sunday brunch every 4-5 weeks. Good food and you can't bear $2 mimosas.

Matts El Rancho is literally the worst mexican food I've ever eaten. And I live in TN, where Mexican food sucks.

Matts has always been more about the atmosphere and the drinks than the food, but come on, it's not the worst. It is decent Tex-Mex, but not the worst unless you are only hanging at 5 star type joints.

I'd call it average Tex-Mex, but it is definitely more of a see and be seen type place, and with drinks of course.
