Howdy, we are coming to town with two seven year old boys and looking for some fun stuff to do. Is the Children's Museum any good? Any other suggestions on events going on this weekend?

The Thinkery is pretty cool and you could also hike on greenbelt.

Children's Museum = Thinkery. Took my niece and nephew who were 7/8 a couple of years ago and my brother and I had as much fun as they did.

Bob Bullock museum of Texas

Has an IMAX theater and a few other interactive stuff. Some of it might be a little over their head.

Thanks for the input folks. Definitely considering the thinkery. The wife already vetoed the Bob Bullock Museum. What is the Trail of Lights and where can I find more info?

I'd highly advise against trail of lights. It's a huge cluster and it's very, very lame. Others will probably counter that, but I stand by my opinion. With Saturday being the opening day, I'd expect it to be even more of a cluster.

Thinkery is great as others have said. Other ideas:
- Light show at Mozart's on lake Austin. Less hassle than trail of lights.
- Model train show at the ArtSpace in downtown Round Rock.
- Ride the Metro Rail to Crestview station for burgers and brews at Black Star Co-op or BBQ at Stiles Switch.

Concur on Thinkery. My 7/8 year old daughter also loved all of the following...take a picnic and enjoy the scenery.

Austin Zoo: www.austinzoo.org

Hiking (anywhere). We particularly liked Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and Balcones District Park (Duval @ Amherst):

Zilker Park (hiking and train): www.zilkerpark.org

As a volunteer for the Trail of Lights, it's alot of fun. Yes, there are alot people there, but just take your time to walk through. Zip passes are great way to bypass the crowds by getting in an hour early to the park.
