Moved to Austin a year ago. What are the things one has to do to enjoy Austin to its fullest. TIA

Son went to an iFLY birthday party yesterday; the video looked awesome, made my bucket list. Barton Springs, Deep Eddy, Lake Travis, Krause Springs, Pedernales Falls, Devils Hole, Blue Hole, Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg, Colorado Bend, The Slab; I know I missed some; Most of what's good here is the Hill Country.

The Oasis (for the view)
Huts
Whole Foods HQ
Waterloo records
Watch the Aggies beat the Horns at DKR (oops)
Live music at Antones, Stubbs, ACL-Live, ACL, The Backyard, or other venue of choice.
Blues on the Green
Formula 1 race
Matts El Rancho
Trudys
Austin Land and Cattle

No new-era hipster place should be on this list.

Some things I've been fortunate to do here:

Saw Lake Travis when it was a 711'
Saw the Fabulous Thunderbirds multiple times but most memorable was at Club Foot
Been to the original Antones
Saw Angela Strehli at a small club (gone now) on Barton Springs Blvd.
Ate at the original Chuys when there was only one
Been to Hamilton Pool when it was privately owned land (people could jump from the crown)
Saw a bald eagle at Lake Buchanan

On the bald eagle front, in the winter time (Feb-March), you should drive out to the nest near Llano and check them out, then go to Cooper's BBQ for lunch. You can include Enchanted Rock on the way back, as that should be a more temperate time to hike and the air will be clearer in the winter.

Running the Capitol 10K is a big rite of passage. Crowded, yes.

Schlitterbahn in the summer time, and/or tubing on a river.

Mt. Bonnell, getting some Amy's ice cream at the arboretum and sitting on the cow statues, enchiladas at Dart Bowl across the street from McCallum HS, canoeing Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake) from Mopac up around Red Bud Isle and back, eating lunch afterwards at Hula Hut and/or getting some coffee at Mozart's.

I'd like to suggest taking a show at Esther's Follies. Their production is about as Austin as it gets.

Good suggestion. Don't need to go every year. But it is an Austin original and well worth it.

Good list. Some of those would cost you street cred on the Politics board, though.

I have 8 years as a GOP precinct chairman in 85% democratic precincts (in 78704 and 78723). Men with scars don't need street cred..

But, yeah. My experience of this town is what you get when you live ten years within 6 miles of the Capitol and are married to a feminist documentary film teacher at t.u..

Along those lines, if you can wiggle an invitation to the private club inside of DKR for lunch, it's an interesting crowd (though somber of late).

FWIW, the coolest private club in town is the Austin Club (old 19th century opera house), and the Headliner's club tends to have the most interesting events.

Yep, we've been there, before last A&M basketball game, and also the one at the Drum a couple of times.

VF, looks like this thread was made for you, ha. There are several things on here I've done, many more that I haven't. The ones I do want to check off, are mostly outside of Austin. How much Hill Country can Austin claim? I consider Austin to be bound by its city limits. I live in Round Rock/Cedar Park and it is not "Austin."

Vestal_Flame

Austin is a city near the Hill Country. This thread points to a lot of things in the Hill Country that Austinites should do, but Austin is no larger than its corporate boundaries, and in some areas is smaller.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Despite the above, I am going to interpret Austin as the greater Austin metro area. (Perhaps Austin is sometimes bigger than the city limits....)

Round Rock Express Baseball

(Cedar Park) Texas Stars Hockey

Rollergirls

Cypress Valley Ziplining

Do something on the water on Town Lake (Paddleboard, kayak, canoe...)

Do something on the water on Lake Austin. (Ski, obviously.)
