Looks like this passed and is pending the governor's signature. Goes into effect Jan. 2025.

From the article:
"The Legislature repealed provisions in state law that mandate annual vehicle inspections. However, the $7.50 fee remains intact under a new name: the inspection program replacement fee."

Goes to show that it was never about safety. Just another money grab and now the state doesn't have to share with the inspection shops.

State never shared with inspection shops. When Texas 2 Step became law in 2015, the price of an inspection was split. You paid $7.50 to the inspection shop and $7.50 to the state. Prior to that, you paid the entire cost of the inspection to the inspection shop and they remitted half to the state.

Now the inspection shop fee is going away but you still pay the state theirs. Bill never would have passed if it had removed all of that revenue from the budget.

Thanks for the clarification.

Still, leave it to our state government to keep collecting money for a service not rendered.
