My son is practically begging for Santa to bring him a dog for Christmas. Does anyone have some puppies available or a young dog that is good with children? Our kids are 4 and 1, so must be able to handle grabby hands and lots of love.

Adopt from a shelter or rescue group, or buy from a reputable breeder with a kennel name who requires you to complete a puppy questionnaire and can show proof of health checks on the puppies.

Don't buy from a backyard breeder that pimps their dog out just to run a mini-puppy mill to make money.

"Every boy should have two things: a dog and a mother who lets him have one" -- Robert Benchley

Adding a canine member to your home can be a wonderful thing. Your children can learn about the bond between them & their fur-sibling, and can learn & take on responsibility roles appropriate with their age.

There are some solid tips already posted in terms of looking for a new addition, and I'd like to put this out there for your consideration: wait until after the holidays before adding a dog to your home. Wait for the celebrations and all the events that go with them to be over so your family can have more time to dedicate to the new member of your home. And waiting a bit will give your family a chance to do more research into what type of dog will be best for your home,

And you can involve the child in the choice!

Thank you all for your input! We are still evaluating and considering the best move.

Just so everyone knows.. We are experienced pet parents. Most recently, a German Shepherd we had for 12 years. We had to put him down about 3 years ago and haven't felt like another dog could live up to him.

We currently foster with Basset Buddies Rescue of Texas and they have some great bassets available for adoption. If you go through a rescue, they can tell you which dogs are good with children, cats, and other dogs. Please give them a look.

BBRTX is great! That's awesome y'all foster for them up here. I adopted a dog from them in 2007 and he was the sweetest guy. He passed two years ago and he's still sorely missed.

We had originally adopted a basset from them and that's how we got on their radar. Not too long ago, they had a rescue pup who really needed the vet school's expertise. They asked if we would be able to foster the little guy and get him to the vet school a couple times a week. I had no idea how much we would love fostering! We currently have one foster and he is the sweetest thing. I really respect that organization and would trust them to be honest about whether or not their bassets would be a good match for the family, which is not something you can really reasonably expect from a shelter or a puppy mill.

This opportunity may be more than you are able to take on - two good sized dogs - but Great Pyres are fantastic family dogs, loving, protective, and typically great with kids.

I love Great Pyres but they need a lot of space to run around, a lot of food, a lot of maintenance.

I love big dogs, but we don't have the space that these guys deserve. Wish we did!

There is also.

These are dogs that have been used in research or possibly puppies that were from litters that were bred for s specific disease and not all in the litter have the trait they need to study so they adopt those healthy dogs out.

Rescue groups that use fosters are usually a good resource because the foster has spent time with the dog and can give insight into their traits more than a shelter dog. (Nothing wrong with shelter dogs but with kids you want to make sure they would be good with kids.) We got a shelter dog when I was a kid and end up having to rehome it because it kept knocking over my little brother. The shelter had said it wouldn't be very big dog but were wrong. He went to live on a farm and we ended up with a smaller dog.

Also, I would encourage you if you would like (it doesn't take much time) once you get a dog, especially a puppy would be to consider enrolling in dog in the Dog Aging Project.

https://dogagingproject.org/

This is a NIH sponsored research that is a longevity study on dogs. There is nothing that you have to do to the dog, or give the dog, they just send you surveys each year and you upload their vet records (if you have them). The goal is to study how dogs age in the hope to be able eventually to find treatments to lengthen and improve the quality of life for dogs, and possibly humans as well.
