Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but does anyone know where I can get a decent firepit for an outdoor fire. Preferably a decent sized one, not cheap sheet metal, wood for the fire, not those ones that you just turn the propane on and the fire rises up through that pretty rock stuff. Thanks for the help Ags!

What they don't know about won't hurt them.

You can have a fire pit...not a bonfire

This came up a couple of weeks ago in southgate area I believe. Neighbor called police and nothing illegal about a firepit.

Have you had a fire truck roll up to a gathering with a fire pit in cocs? I have. They they made them put it out. So they indicated must be 10 feet from any structure, it was, and must be covered by a fine mesh, it only was covered by a expanded metal grate. They indicated chiminea was acceptable. Of course cocs uses nfpa which you cant access for free, and actually amend section 304.42 to include fire pits but who knows what that section is about.
I try to ask some fire people Saturday when i see them, but unless something has changed uncovered fire pits are a non starter.
Police saying its ok is like asking your mechanic if you should have your gall bladder removed. Maybe correct.but not an authoritive source.

Oh grief. This is an already ordered gift. Can we have a Solo fire pit in Bryan?

COCS uses IFC, not NFPA for their fire codes.
All of the amendments can be found on the city website.

Just google "fire pits in college station" and you get these rules from the fire marshal's page.

They're fine.

The picture in that graphic shows a fire pit that looks like a ground placed structure, and what you buy labeled as a "fire pit" at most outdoor stores and which OP seemed to be asking about is labeled portable fire place. Their depiction of that is fully enclosed. Also important to the discussion is the requirements stated setbacks from structures or combustible materials. In one discussion with FD they considered plants/grass/mulch, combustible and wood fences of course combustible. If this is still their interpretation 25' separation from structure, fence or plant material means a pretty big slab/improved surface or bare earth (?160 sq ft min).
So yes the are allowed with significant restrictions and is what you are buying going to be considered a fire pit or portable fire place by the enforcement people. YMWV.

Looks like the COCS amendment to IFC 307.4.2 adds fire pits/boxes to the recreational fires definition with corresponding restrictions.

You are in Bryan, they typically lean toward the side of sanity, but I have not specific experience.
In CS you typically can assume exactly the opposite

You have to read the whole thing…there is exceptions for one and two family dwellings. If you have questions about the code interpretation I would suggest calling the CS Fire Marshal's Office, they will be happy to clarify it for you.

You must have been having quite the get-together to warrant that amount of code compliance thrown at you.
