So went to a funeral in Houston recently. Took a long route to get from the church to the cemetery. Had at least 4 police on motorcycles. Who pays them? Are they on duty while they preform this service? Do they like doing it? Who knows how this works?

They are off duty, it's a nice side job for the cops.

I forget what I paid for them at each of my parents funeral, but it's not cheap.

My nephew was PD when my mother (his grandmother) passed. The procession was manned by his fellow officers at no charge to the family as a courtesy. No one mentioned the no charge until I inquired why that was missing from the bill. My mother would have been so proud.

A friend of mine is a LEO in a neighboring jurisdiction. When my dad passed last year, my friend asked to escort the funeral procession as a way to honor my dad. Small town an hour from here. Every Single Vehicle stopped and pulled over and waited for the procession to pass. Not sure that it would have happened here in BCS but it sure meant a lot to my family.

I remember always pulling over and getting out of your car. Glad it still goes on in a small town. Respect.

It happens here as well. Maybe not on the bypass, but certainly on other roads/streets.

Generally you're looking at roughly $50/hour per cop for something like that. Some departments have a minimum number of hours (usually 3 or 4). Depending on route/traffic, you'd need at least 4 officers. Gets expensive fast. Cops love doing that kind of stuff. Easy overtime money, and they get to drive fast to shut roads down.

Pretty sure the city/county gets a cut because they are using publicly owned vehicles.

In larger cities ie Houston, there are private companies that hire privately owned motorcycles to do this. I am not sure how they stop traffic etc legally.

I have been watching a series on this on You Tube featuring the fight between Orange County Florida sheriff deputies and a private company. The deputies have been writing citations and the private company continues to fight them in court.

I think the real battle is that the private company is underbidding the deputies and they are losing business

I'm in Bryan. See these daily being on Texas Ave. I always pull over if I'm in a car, take off my hat. I don't get out of my car. If outside at work I take off my hat. Stop and wait till it passes then go back to work.
