I have a friend visiting in a few weeks who is big into flying RC planes. Where is a good place in the area ? Any groups who meet regularly?

There's a field / club out in Wixon Valley. I'm not sure what their current situation is. I doubt there will be any other public places to fly planes. Helicopters / drones may be a different story.

Back in ancient times, us olds used to fly both rockets and planes at the Polo Fields, but since A&M has become a hoity-toity, world class university, we common townspeople are no longer allowed to set foot on campus.

I kid, I kid!

What about out at Bachman Park on Rock Prairie or Veteran's Park? Out at Rellis?

It all depends on what is being flown. Most RC folks are members of the AMA (Academy of model Aeronautics) and the AMA insurance will only cover accidents and damage to people or property if at an AMA approved field.

I once saw a guy crash a big RC helicopter at brothers pond park, 10-15 yards from a playground with kids. He was totally out of control! I warned the guy in advance. He laughed it off. I was pretty pissed off.

If they are flying small electric "park flyers", they can probably fly in small parks, fields etc.

It's been 17 years since Ive flown, so y'all let me know if things have changed.

I remember seeing the actual photos from that accident. About what you'd expect. Pretty gruesome. Did some light research on those kind of RC choppers afterwards.

**** that. They are flying blenders and the way these people fly them.....I am shocked this is not a normal occurrence.

Yeah, have never gotten that weird, high performance chopper meta that has developed over the years, either.

I've seen a group at the South end of Hearne airport from time to time.

There's a group based in Houston that launches rockets out there once a month. I went out there a few months ago and was surprised that the airport wasn't closed during launch time.

This was my main plane. Kombat Airmadillo 60. It was made of corrugated plastic (like an election sign) aluminum channel, bolts, nuts, washers, and zip ties. It flew like a brick but was a lot of fun. I could smash it into the ground and have it back up an hour later.
