My very good friend and the mom of one of my awesome Girl Scouts, Sunita Contreras '98, lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, Jan. 2. She leaves behind 2 children and a husband. Her daughter, Crystal, is a graduating senior and has been a Girl Scout with my daughter since kindergarten and part of my troop since 3rd grade. Sunita worked the Aggie games at the concession booths with me for the last 5 years raising money for our girls to go on trips. Last year as we worked in the stand, she learned that the painful spots on her legs were signs of a rare stage 4 lymphoma. As an RN at Scott and White in College Station, she was the primary breadwinner for her family and the center of everything in the household. They are having a really rough time and could use some help. I'm posting a Meal Train here since in this time, people can send meals for the family virtually and donate for funeral and other expenses. Thank you for anything you can do.

I worked for a year with Sunita in an assisted living facility in town and she was kind and thoughtful. I'm sorry to hear this update. May her family have peace and be blessed... she did EVERYTHING in the name of her family...everything.

Note: It's my understanding that she was unaware something was wrong until she had bumps on her leg that would not heal. As someone who is not medical, I always think if something is wrong oh, we'll always know but I only bring this up to say even as a very knowledgeable and skilled RN, she was somewhat unaware something was wrong in her own body. To that end, everyone let this be a reminder to be sure to listen to your bodies and observe any changes, take them seriously, etc.

Yes. She noticed the bumps after a trip to Mexico so just thought she got some bug bites and they got infected. There were no other signs and she was at least proactive enough to keep going to doctors until she got a diagnosis after the bumps opened up into sores. She worked for Scott and White so she had to go through their process to see specialists until she got to the correct diagnosis. Unfortunately by the time she got that diagnosis, it was already at stage 4. However because of how very rare and aggressive the cancer was, there's no guarantee that catching it early would have helped. She truly tried everything possible to just hang on until her daughter's graduation from high school in May. They told her even with aggressive treatment, there is no cure.
