Starting a different thread so as to not muddy up the actual numbers one. I am one of those happy the students are back, despite their poor driving habits. Lol. I have seen social media posts damning them for their behavior and I don't understand the need to do so.

I went to the Wellborn HEB on Sunday and literally everyone was wearing a mask.
Class schedules have been modified
Sorority rush was via zoom
There are stringent in house guidelines in place for dorms and Greek houses.

Yeah, kids will gather but I don't think they will do so in public nor will they meet in large numbers.
If kids take their masks off when meeting friends outside or whatever at someone's house...how is that different than what you and I do?

Yeah, the numbers will go up. I just don't think the students need to be admonished right off the bat. They also deserve the opportunity to limit the impact of how quickly we spike assuming we have a big increase.

The same applies to how we get over this potential initial jump in cases. It hasn't happened yet; let's at least see the results and go from there.

Rant over.

I am glad they are back. Our businesses desperately need it.

When getting my pedicure Friday there were 3 girls sending invites out to a party but telling everyone they can't post photos so they don't get in trouble.

This. Kids will be kids. Life will go on. As much as I enjoy the quiet Christmas and summertime when they are out, I love the energy they bring to the town.

There have been lots and lots and lots of large, unmasked gatherings this week, both indoors and out. There are going to be hundreds of cases in the next few weeks. That being said, I'm happy to see young, healthy people out living their lives and I hope the university doesn't overreact to a bunch of mild cases.

That twitter page is embarrassing on so many levels. The most ridiculous post I saw was a graduate student, studying lesbian porn, trying to get people to sign a petition to not allow in person classes.

It's many of the same malcontents who are trying to take down Sully.

So no in-person labs for that degree?

I can guarantee you that person is screaming online about student loan forgiveness because they will have zero job opportunities once they graduate.....

Since my post got deleted yesterday on the other thread...

We'll be paying close attention to the hospitalization rate of college age people over the next month. I know we can't tell the age of the people in the hospital from the info BCHS gives out, but if the wards are slammed with college aged COVID patients I'm sure that info will get out.

I personally do not expect that to happen, and if my hunch is correct that case counts will spike but that hospitalizations will not spike even close to proportionally, I'm of the opinion that it is not necessarily a bad thing.

Children in schools and college aged persons contracting the coronavirus and NOT getting sick to the point of needing medical attention will help us as they will become removed at least temporarily from the pool of vectors of transmission.

UNC Chapel Hill shut down on campus classes after one week due to 130 positives (about 900 tests).

All symptoms are minor.

We are treading on thin ice, all of a sudden.

As with K-12, isn't the risk (of hospitalization) greater with the faculty/staff at A&M who are more likely to be (on average) older than 50?

Not all were granted the ability to teach from home, so if the counts began to surge, the admins might be looking at that, too.

There is no way that those in power are going to allow the corona doom and fear porn to stop.

As soon as a few students test positive; they'll shut the campus down again.

Yeah, I'd always assumed the primary concern would be secondary spread to more vulnerable populations.
FlyRod
How long do you want to ignore this user?
^That is correct.

Unless the virus is mutating more severely (unlikely) increases in hospitalizations will likely come from TAMU staff food service, dorm cleaners, etc), instructors, local employees from businesses heavily patronized by students.

They should just mandate - If you are positive, self-isolate. We need young healthy kids to get it and get over it.

Only way a student would die is if they have severe underlying health issues. Anyone who is that high risk should be staying away from he public. The death of a healthy, 18-25 year old from this virus is about as rare as it is for the flu, if not rarer.

I give them two weeks (because it is always two weeks when it comes to the China virus) from the first case before they shut it all down again.

I'm not surprised that UNC or Norte Dame would shut it down.

What I am surprised about is that they go through the charade of opening up, inviting students back and making an attempt at in person classes to begin with. I mean, at UNC it was 130 cases. 130 out of thousands and thousands. How in the world could they NOT have known they would have at least that many cases? They had to know, and that's what is infuriating. They knew all along they would shut it down. Putting up a show to act like they were going to open it up so they wouldn't lose enrollment is fraud, and they need to be called on it.

Class doesn't even start until tomorrow. I do know kids who have caught it AND those who were around them have been sent home for 2 weeks. So if 2 kid caught it and they exposed 12 other people; they are all gone for 2 weeks. As in home.

I am a faculty member and start my class on Thursday. Unlike other schools (ie UNC, ND, MSU etc) we are completely in the dark as to how many students have tested positive or the positivity rate. I did have another professor get one of the "fast" tests that A&M promised would have a 2-3 day turn around. It's been 2 weeks and he hasn't heard anything.

My husband is a TAMU employee and had the "fast" test done last week. Received his negative results in 24 hrs.

I think those schools have started class so that may impact the reporting. I'm a supporter of sending kids home for a couple of weeks along with their friends to see how that works. We will never know what the boundaries are until we push them. I'm not sure we will get to see this theory fleshed out to get pat the hump, though.

Toxic Ag, it might be worth checking out the Expo Center testing, as others here have said it's pretty fast to get results.
