I was making a store run after morning clinic and saw a few of the Aggie buses driving around. Anyone know why they are still running? Students are supposed to be shelter in place and we know mass transit is a problem with COVID spread.

My office is right on a bus route and I had the same thought.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Probably doing the same thing they do over summer and winter break; running reduced service.
Some people still have to work and/or do research. Just because "campus is closed" doesn't mean it's shut down, just that there's nothing open for non-essential people.

Keep in mind not everyone at TAMU is undergrad or has a car.
There are many grad students and post-docs who depend on the bus for things like getting to work or HEB runs.
I can see many of the grads and post-docs running "essential research" projects so they still have to get to work. I've seen them working even over the Christmas break week when everyone is supposed to be home.

I know here in Chicago CTA is still running regular transit service.
If TAMU was to stop all bus service, it could impact the ability to get future researchers, grad students, and post-docs as word would spread that if classes are cancelled for undergrads there is no way to get to work.

They have guidelines to social distance when riding the buses. As Scruffy noted there are those here that have no car, have no real home, and need this transportation to get to work, get food, etc.

As posted 3/20/2020: (TAMU Coronavirus website)

Modified Service and Service Hours
  • Beginning March 23: Modified Service (M-F, 7am-10pm) and Weekend Service (Sat-Sun, 9am-5pm). All routes are running. We are constantly monitoring occupancy and adjusting service levels. Check bus schedules regularly for the most current information and real time bus locations.
No more than 30 people per bus
  • Enter and exit using rear door
  • Maintain distance from other passengers
  • If a bus reaches capacity of 30 people, it will bypass remaining stops on the route until it reaches the designated on-campus stop.
  • Transit will dispatch a supplemental bus to the impacted route to offset the missed stops.
Bus Cleaning
  • We have enhanced our cleaning methods cleaning with products and methods prescribed by the CDC for reducing the spread of illness.
  • If you are not feeling well and especially if you are running a fever, please do not board the buses.

Less than 30 people? Then all of the Brazos Transit buses are safe zones. They could lower the maximum to 5, and still not be challenged to comply....

It has to be cheaper for A&M to just pay uber fees instead of driving around mostly empty busses all day right?

But they have some sort of control over bus cleaning/disinfecting.

Plus they can keep at least some of the drivers employed.

Same could be said for those Brazos buses that drive around empty all the time, not just during a pandemic

Uber and Lyft operations are currently suspended with the exception of UberEats.
