Week of 5/24: 92 cases, 1 death
Week of 5/31: 87 cases, 2 deaths
Week of 6/7:118 cases, 0 deaths
Week of 6/14: 81 cases, 3 deaths
Week of 6/21-: 80 cases, 3 deaths
Week of 6/28: 81 cases, 3 deaths
Week of 7/5: 73 cases, 0 deaths
Week of 7/12: 113 cases, 2 deaths

On cases - post-July 4 gathering spread, delta variant, general letting down of guards, or what? Personally not real concerned unless a sustained multi-week climb occurs. Otherwise this is just a blip.

2 males on 30s and 50s is a little concerning. Of course we don't know of preexisting conditions or vaccination situation.

I work in a hospital. The distribution of admissions has changed because of vaccination in older folks > younger folks. It would be disturbing if that wasn't the case - it would indicate vaccine wasn't effective in the older population.

Curious if you've seen any "breakthrough infections" yet?

Not personally. But they exist. Remember the words of Hugh Grant in "She's having a baby" - 98% effective means 2% worthless. It's actually not worthless: even those who get covid after vaccination seem to have less severe disease. Also - real world efficacy is seldom as good as study efficacy. So actual use 90-92% would be reasonable to expect for the best vaccines.

Thanks, those are good points. I was wondering if subjects in the studies were representative, or were younger, healthier, fewer co-morbidities, etc. Hence higher efficacy rates maybe?

The only important metric is hospital occupancy. That's it.

I'd add incidents of Long Covid (which may contribute to hospital occupancy), with the caveat that getting a measurable handle on this is still tricky.

We aren't getting local numbers because why would they give us something helpful? That doesn't mean that data isn't being collected and reported.

Nationally, we're seeing an average of 97% of hospitalizations being unvaccinated.

We need to know if "they" are red or blue to determine if it is the fault of orange man!

Are we still talking about numbers? My comment about hysteria is fair. The media has never had any interest in reporting about this thing with a fair and level headed mindset. The CDC is also politicized. Speaking of, we have politicians who feed off the media and just want to control people. That's it.

So now we have a spike. Do you want to not freak out and let it pass or get back on the mask up no matter what and shut crap down bandwagon?

I've taken the vaccine. I can comment and tell the media and politicians to kiss my brown ass. Those wankers are responsible for the mayhem created by, you guessed it, CHINA. Yet China just does their thing and we all suffer.

There you go. Full on F16!

Edit to add: To eradicate this it will be combination of people getting vaccinated and getting the virus. We all knew that. So now unvaccinated people who have not had the virus are getting it but not vaccinated ones. Good! That's progress on all fronts.

And here comes the panic from the local media.

From KBTX's Twitter: "Active COVID-19 cases rise above 300."

Just a question: don't jump to one side or the other.

Do we know of any reason we would be seeing an increase in testing lately? Is it all symptom based or are there programs (summer camps, etc) requiring it?

Yeah, we all had a cold. I didn't get us tested though. It wasn't going to change anything. We just stayed home while contagious.

The TAMU Covid dashboard (which everyone here hates), shows a bit of a recent jump. Probably reflecting students trickling back.

Testing started ramping up around the country about 4-6 weeks ago due to other respiratory viruses making an unscheduled appearance, especially RSV. Since their symptoms can be the same or similar, often people get tested for the flu, RSV, and the China virus at the same time. While this probably doesn't account for all of it, it is definitely a good chunk.

The US is back to doing over 1 million tests per day for the last couple of weeks (give or take a few days) and that was before the media went into over drive about the DV.

And now with the insanity over the DV, everyone with a runny nose is probably getting tested.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

The anger and vitriol at getting a vaccine for a highly contagious disease just floors me. It's like people have forgotten the 50s and polio.
