Because they're either too dumb to understand how it works after a years worth of reporting, or they choose to report fear to get clicks and draw viewers.

Based on their track record of reporting, their headlines and FB posts the last few years, I'm leaning toward the later. It's really sad at this point.

The hospitalizations are double what was reported 2 weeks ago and the highest since May 3rd. Does anyone know if there's a particular reason, say for example, Region N accepting patients from other regions?

Unlikely, there's plenty of beds available throughout the state.

More likely there's a small outbreak in one of the other counties in our region.

While it might sound like a broken record, all it takes is an outbreak at a nursing home to spike hospitalizations, even with the vaccines. Vaccines often do not work as well in the elderly because they already have weaker immune systems, and in relation to this particular virus, they often have other conditions which makes them more susceptible to complications.

That said, there is at least one in Brazos County which had at least a few cases in the past week. Hopefully it was nothing serious and has burned itself out. I have no information if there is one in another country (there have been several earlier in the year, even after the vaccines were being given to most nursing home patients), but it would not be a surprise.

If we had any actual journalists in this town and not just news outlets which do nothing anymore but republish Texas Tribune propaganda, they'd be asking if there is any reason for the increase.

I wish I could say I was more broken up about this news
No need to be broken up. Peters said he believes his approach to this (no vaccine) was appropriate for him and his situation, and his symptoms are mild. He's not even broken up about it.

This is also the same approach I'm taking.

I will also agree that your response was tacky, but that's on you.

I'd normally agree with you but we aren't really seeing that in the data. Here's the total increase in new cases by age cohort over the past 2 weeks:

0-9: 19
10-19: 30
20-29: 59
30-39: 49
40-49: 17
50-59: 16
60-69: 7
70-79: 3
80-89: 2
90+ : 0

If there has been an outbreak in nursing homes lately, its not showing up in the BCHD case counts by age. Unless the BCHD has yet another data issue which wouldn't totally shock me. the vast majority of the increase in cases is in 30 year olds and younger. Only 12 total cases over the past 2 weeks from anyone age 60 and older.

That's just Brazos Co though. The trauma region covers Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington. An outbreak in any of those could be responsible for the increased hospitalizations.

7 weeks ago - 211 cases, 2 deaths
6 weeks ago - 187 cases, 2 deaths
5 weeks ago - 141 cases, 1 death
4 weeks ago - 93 cases, 1 death
3 weeks ago - 92 cases, 1 death
2 weeks ago - 87 cases, 2 deaths
Last Week - 118 cases, 0 deaths
This Week - 81 cases, 3 deaths

Case count back on trend. My heart goes out to the families of the 3 - with 2 in their 50s.

Not a bad a 8 weeks, but with folks still passing with at least having Covid at the time it's still nothing to make light of.

Just remember the deaths weren't yesterday. Given the difference in the count from the state and what the BCHD was reporting, they occurred over several weeks.

Yes, and a great reminder for all. My last statement was only to point out that there will be people who will be in no mood to make light of covid, mostly because they blame covid for lost loved ones, and maybe because they themselves had bad cases. But you are correct.

Good point.

And the state just added a death (to make the county total 257) to their June 16th "date of death" spreadsheet which occurred March 31.

Data lag is a bummer.

I know there was a death a couple days ago, a father at a friend's daycare they operate. He had been sick for a while, I don't know any details other than he's not the guy that was in the news last week. I don't think he was in his 50's but I could be wrong. There hasn't been a younger male death posted since then.
