Dr. Sullivan's comments on the radio this morning (from public comments yesterday) pretty much summed it up.

Essentially:

This isn't a surprise. This is what viruses do. We are not overly alarmed.

The news announcer went on to add that all 4 of the folks infected with the new strain are experiencing mild symptoms and have not required hospitalization.

It appears overall to be a more highly transmissible variant but not a more severe one.

Staff wants those discussions to occur on the covid board. I'm pretty sure there are multiple Aggie doctors giving their thoughts and observations.

However, isnt that just one more opinion regardless? We've got Dr Fauci! Lol

It is interesting that after almost an entire week of truly being shut down, with no school, nobody going to restaurants, most people not going out at all (sounds like a lockdown to me), the daily numbers we are seeing are pretty much the same as they were before the lockdown/snowpocalypse. It's almost as if shutting restaurants, bars, and schools down doesn't have much effect on the spread of the virus.

Perhaps, but there quite a few timeline graphs showing cases dropping after shutdowns and rising after reopening, and not just in Texas.

Could be coincidence of course.

Did you see how many people crammed into HEB before the storms hit? There was no social distancing.

I quit social distancing last April. My covid fear lasted about 4 weeks and I had every opportunity to catch it and never did.

That's behind a paywall for me, but what's the gist of it? Hopefully just fear porn right?

No fear porn. Just saying A&M has two clusters on campus.

Explains some of the cases this week.

Same story on KBTX (no paywall involved):

https://www.kbtx.com/2021/02/27/texas-am-reports-two-new-clusters-for-the-week/

Both clusters are in the same Corps dorm. It sounds like they announced a cluster in one part of that dorm and then expanded the cluster (calling it a 2nd cluster) to include that entire dorm.

You guys would lose your minds if you knew how many students had covid and never got tested or reported it to anybody.

Without a doubt, although it is possible there are 1 or more that are off campus. We had students packed into the dorms, apartments, fraternity/sorority houses for a week with nothing to do. It was pretty much inevitable that there would be some clusters among the student population.

The good thing is, they are the age group which is highly unlikely to have a serious illness (yes, it can happen to someone with preexisting health issues, and the random fluke case, but the same thing can and does happen with numerous other viral illnesses) and the quicker it burns through that age group, the closer we get to herd immunity.

There are a few who would, but most of us would not be surprised or upset in the least. We knew it would burn through the student population much more than the general population. There were discussions about it on this thread and elsewhere. They are some of the lowest risk people for the virus and for all but a few, it is an annoyance and nothing more.
