It was on Rusty's post about it. So much misinformation and flat out rumors in the comments.

do we have a solid definition of "vulnerable population"
According to the Texas Dept. of State Health Services, they are individuals who are at greater risk of severe disease and death if they contract COVID-19. For Phase 1A of vaccination in Texas, it appears to be residents of long-term care facilities. Phase 1B individuals can also get the vaccine, depending on availability and vaccine provider.

Thanks. I have a 1B in the house and I'm looking to see if we've reached that point yet.

From stumbling around the internet, I've drawn some opinions on the vaccine roll out in Brazos county.

First, there's a data published time lag in the numbers. Don't know exactly, but it seems 3 to 7 days is typical, according to national articles. The county numbers are posted on the state site.

There's a limited availability of vaccine. The current vaccines require 2 doses. Once a person receives a dose, they reserve a dose for the second injection.

As of December 28th reporting (which is for the data ending December 27), the county had 1475 doses. They had administered 679 shots. 46% of available vaccine.

As of December 30th reporting (which is the data ending December 29), the county had 5075 doses (additional 3,600 doses). They had administered 906 shots (additional 227 shots).

As of the most recent reporting (Dec 30) the state has 678,925 doses.

The county represents 0.76% of the state population and has 0.75% of the doses. Note that vaccine doses available are now changing daily.

At this point I would say the supply of vaccine is the biggest reason (assuming data is timely) for lack of injections. Given that the county has received over triple the doses it had 2 days ago, it will take some time to administer. Also read that locations administering the vaccine are not certain of new supply.

The state started reporting, as of December 13th. We are into the third week of this process. The vaccine is also coming out in the holiday season. I'm not saying the results are 5 star, but considering the circumstances, I think things are going about as well as reasonably expected. I'm hoping things will look more impressive in a couple of weeks.

If the US can administer 200,000,000 flu shots a year (I'm guessing the bulk of that in 3 months), without anyone noticing, I would think 600,000,000, or so, Covid shots wouldn't be a game changer, as the media want's us to believe. I walk into CVS the first week in October, and rarely wait for a flu shot.

UPDATE: Per Mimi's post below, the reserve for the 2nd dose is no longer required. As far as I can find, it was "ordered" December 29th.

From the Texas Department of State Health Services:

"All providers that have received COVID-19 vaccine must immediately vaccinate healthcare workers, Texans over the age of 65, and people with medical conditions that put them at a greater risk of severe disease or death from COVID-19. No vaccine should be kept in reserve."
DSHS Commissioner John Hellerstedt, M.D.

Mimi,

This appears to be a new policy as of yesterday (Dec 29th). The media seems to be blaming the people trying to follow the rules. They failed to mention that this is a change in policy.

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/coronavirus/texas-top-health-official-urges-quick-vaccinations/2515718/

The following is from the Wall Street Journal

https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-covid-19-vaccines-roll-out-states-to-determine-who-gets-shots-first-11607509801

"A federal official said Wednesday that an additional 2.9 million doses would be held back and shipped about three weeks later for those initial vaccine recipients to get the second of the two-dose regimen"

Things are bad enough and, as usual, media is creating a false narrative that vaccinators are doing something wrong. And the politicians are blaming somebody for following their rules.

Sorry for the rant, but it's typical of the media and politicians.

With all that said, it does seem to be a better plan, assuming new supplies of the same company will be available when needed for the second dose..

1B group now getting vaccine some places:

https://www.expressnews.com/coronavirus/article/texas-vaccine-distribution-info-15836160.php

Quote:

"People in Phase 1A and Phase 1B may now get the vaccine. Because the vaccine is still considered in "limited supply," the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) says it may not be available for everyone in Phase 1B.

However, state health officials have raised concerns about the limited amount of doses that have actually been administered. According to the San Antonio Express-News, only 27 percent of the 611,850 doses delivered statewide have been administered.

Texas is set to receive another 1.4 million vaccines by Thursday.

Who is in Phase 1A and Phase 1B?

Phase 1A: Includes healthcare workers in hospital settings working directly with COVID-19 positive or high risk patients, long-term care staff, EMS providers, home health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities.

Phase 1B: Anyone 65 years and older, pregnant women and anyone over the age of 16 with a pre-existing condition. These conditions include cancer, heart issues such as heart failure or coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, solid organ transplant, obesity or severe obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease or Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

DSHS commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt said vaccine providers need to "pivot quickly" to Phase 1B once all willing members of Phase 1A have been vaccinated. Providers, however, don't need to ensure all Phase 1A members have received their doses before moving onto the next group.

If I qualify, how do I get the vaccine?

People in Phase 1B will need to make an appointment with a provider who has a vaccine supply. Providers are listed on this map and include medical facilities, pharmacies and hospitals. Each provider will let patients know if they are eligible and if they have doses of the vaccine available.

Who is next, and when?

Texas' Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel is considering criteria for later stages of vaccine distribution. It is unclear what the next phase will look like, but it is likely the general public won't receive the vaccine until at least the spring.

If the 1.4 million doses happens, it would be an additional double of the current 680,000, for a total of 2.1 million.

That's more than enough to cover ONE SHOT for 1.9 million in group 1A.

This is all good news.

More information regarding who is included in Phase 1B:

Quote:

Because Phase 1B provides vaccine to higher-risk people regardless of their work sector or status, it will provide protection for a number of critical populations at an increased risk of getting COVID-19: communities that are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and other chronic diseases; teachers and school staff who ensure that Texas children can learn in a safe environment; social services workers who ensure that those in need receive care and support; workers who maintain critical infrastructure to support the Texas economy; and other front-line workers who are unable to work remotely and so are more likely to be exposed.

Type 2 DMs are older and more likely to have co-morbidities (HTN, dyslipidemia, heart disease, etc) compared to the vast majority of Type 1s. However I believe poorly controlled Type 1 DMs (A1C > 8% or so) should be 1B as well.

Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
Solid organ transplantation
Obesity and severe obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher)
Pregnancy
Sickle cell disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus

I'm guessing it is listing "such as" illnesses. Maybe Type 1 is so bad that it's not even questioned? But who knows.

This roll out is a moving target. Not sure how the average person can keep up without spending a lot of time on the internet. A lot of time.

I had commented to a couple people about KBTX's headline about most hospitalizations since this started. But at the end, the percentage of bed capacity and icu capacity was actually 10% or more lower than it has been previously.

To me it was a case in point of hospitals adjusting to the case loads and doing what they had to to manage the number of cases coming through the door.

But don't try to explain that to fear driven crazies out there.

1B can receive it. My mother just got the vaccine (over 65 years old, pre-existing respiratory disease). Additionally, pharmacies have to use the entire vial within a certain amount of time once opened or else toss it. So they're free to go further down the list to prevent throwing away vaccine.

Not sure but here's a list of all that have received the vaccine for distribution in the area: https://tda.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=48fe04f1feded788b081a8005&id=0aefa62754&e=378b230f18

And KBTX is out with their daily dose of intentionally misleading fear porn so the sheeple will think that all 104% of ICU beds are being used by coronavirus patients.

It seems like out of county cases are what are really driving the numbers. Brazos County has been sitting 40-50 for a while now (a big chunk of which is nursing home related cases), but everyday we get more from elsewhere, so some other county or counties are driving the real increase.

If it turns out we're still importing them from outside the area, then someone's head needs to roll.

That's good, because doing so would just be the height of stupidity.

So that leaves the question, which county/counties are producing a lot of patients right now. I could probably go figure it out, but I'm feeling lazy today.

Well, don't thank me yet.

Right after posting that, I went downstairs and my SO told me that.. first, she got an email confirming her vaccination time slot, then a short while later, she got another email saying that her reservation was cancelled because she did not provide enough information to establish her eligibility.

But as I said above, they didn't ask for any proof of eligibility on the sign-up form! Dorks.

I went back to double-check the form and there is now a new question at the bottom that wasn't there this morning:

SO had responded to the rejection email explaining that she was in group 1B (she has COPD), and she received a reply asking, "what's 1B?".

We've come to 2 conclusions:
1. perhaps the link we received wasn't meant to be shared in the first place
2. the point of contact for this sign-up process does not seem very familiar with the whole vaccination situation

Agreed. And yeah, we could look at each county in region N but I'm too lazy for that.

I called St Joseph's and asked about this sign up genius. They won't be ready for 1B because they don't have the paperwork! Said it would be 3 weeks. That should not be - it can't be that hard to make a consent form. They need to get going. Seems like they aren't in any rush!

My SO is 1B and we got her a spot for next week. The reservation does not require any proof that you are eligible (1A or 1B).. I guess you will have to provide that when you go? /shrug/

To clarify/reiterate, that signup link is for CHISJ employees only and was not supposed to be shared. From the email:

I have removed the post/link. It was forwarded to my gf by a caring friend without any indication or explanation that it was intended only for St Joe's employees or 1B's with access to a St Joe's email address, and those responsible for implementing the sign-up form were obviously not encouraged to restrict access to it beyond that.

AggiePhil: We did not receive the email you quoted, nor was it forwarded to us -- only the link.
