And some of the cases are from a drive thru event weeks ago. But we don't know how many ....Just that it's 40 or less......

I like looking at the rolling 7 day average as I feel it better captures trends versus day by day which can vary wildly.

Under comm/trvl/cluster, you have 75/1/1, but 80 new cases. Does that mean 3 are unknown?

It is unknown because they don't give enough detail to get specific data. The 3 numbers they give add up to 99.9 and not 100%. Plus my number is the delta from yesterday, so it's effectively impacted by 2 days of slight rounding issues due to only 0.1% detail.

agrab is late.... so....

why, again, are we hyperventilating over .36% active cases?

Since we have no freaking idea when these tests were done which returned the cases today, it once again shows why number of cases as a stand alone statistic is beyond worthless.

Thanks for picking me up here. I was over on the basketball forum busting Caruso's decision making.

But yes, very low active case rate. What is the big deal??

Has it already been explained on here how the number of hospitalizations can go down while the occupancy percentage goes up? Seems to defy logic.

Im not convinced this is a novel virus. One has to consider the fact that this is statistically non existent in kids, very mild in young adults and half of those testing positive are not sick that our bodies have some sort of immunity... It must in many cases recognize the virus to mount an attack... perhaps because its so similar to colds... maybe.. just musing anyway... thoughts?

It is novel. We know the entire RNA sequence of every virus they are very simple. It is a new sequence this is not guessing it is hard science and well proven.

Have you looked at lockett's spreadsheet? 7.5% of the new cases reported yesterday were under the age of 15 (6% of total cases), 17.5% under the age of 20 (12% of total cases).. where do you draw the line for "statistically insignificant"?

To me it's insignificant in kids since nationally 50 people under 15 have died. In that same time, 7852 total deaths under 15.

Covid just doesn't affect children in any significant way.

We will learn more when the HEROS study is concluded. That began a couple of months ago.

This is from the CDC release regarding the study:
Quote:

A study to help determine the rate of novel coronavirus infection in children and their family members in the United States has begun enrolling participants. The study, called Human Epidemiology and Response to SARS-CoV-2 (HEROS), also will help determine what percentage of children infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, develop symptoms of the disease. In addition, the HEROS study will examine whether rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection differ between children who have asthma or other allergic conditions and children who do not. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, is sponsoring and funding the HEROS study.

Quote:

"One interesting feature of this novel coronavirus pandemic is that very few children have become sick with COVID-19 compared to adults," said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. "Is this because children are resistant to infection with SARS-CoV-2, or because they are infected but do not develop symptoms? The HEROS study will help us begin to answer these and other key questions."
Lastly, that they are studying family groups is hopefully going to be informative:

Quote:

The HEROS study team will rapidly enroll 6,000 people from 2,000 U.S. families already participating in NIH-funded pediatric research studies in 11 cities. Study participants will include both healthy children and children with asthma or other allergic conditions. The study team will prospectively follow these children and their families for six months to determine who gets infected with SARS-CoV-2, whether the virus is transmitted to other family members, and which family members with the virus develop COVID-19.

The study began in May(?) I think, so it has a ways to go before completed, but as it progresses they can add to their knowledge bank and recommendations for health providers and families.

With that, I'm out--this is a derail and should probably be moved.

And how many were from the drive through testing event, two weeks ago, and were tested without any symptoms? How many, if any, ever showed symptoms?

Numbers alone tell us very little, but as we see all the time, are used to manufacture fear or push an agenda.

From my personal experience so far the vast majority of positive children were tested because the parents were sick. They had minimal to no symptoms.

Just throwing that in there. I am not stating this will be the case for every single child.

I was responding to the claim that it is statistically non-existent in kids, not that the number of child deaths or symptomatic child cases is statistically small.

Related question: Has there been anything published to the effect of "children under the age of X do not go through a contagious phase and cannot transmit the coronavirus to others"? Honest question.

Interesting on the pie chart how >15 is 6% and 15-19 is 9.2%. It's possibly a typo, but it would be a really bad sign if someone doesn't know the difference between greater than and less than.

I guess you have to know what they meant when they said that.

The number of very sick kids is approaching zero.
The number of kids that test positive is some non-negligible portion of the positive-test numbers.

It's an error. First appeared on 7-19 and no one has fixed it.
