My son was just lectured by the Papa John's driver that the $2 tip he gave on a $7 pizza was not enough. Guilted him into increasing the tip.

Anyone asking for/demanding a bigger tip deserves no tip.

What pisses me off is now most pizza places charge a "delivery fee" on top of the driver expecting a tip. It cost about 10 bucks to get a pizza delivered. I would rather just go pick it up. Maybe that's by design.

Called and tried to complain to the manager.
Essentially got cut off with a "k, thanks. Bye" and then he hung up on me.

Rock Prairie location for those who might order from them.

Me too, usually. No tip in that case.
No tip for doing the bare minimum of getting my food to me. If you need more for that then charge more.

You realize that the driver doesn't get the delivery fee in that instance right? So you are just screwing the driver.

Read again. This was if I go pick up.

What is the delivery fee for? I assume it is to pay the driver a salary. Why should a driver expect more of a tip than a waiter at a restaurant?

So, back to the original question..
What do YOU tip?

Per pizza? Percentage of the bill? Flat rate?

I admit that I may be under tipping. What is normal?

Same as restaurants/Favor: 15% of the total BEFORE tax and fees, maybe up to 20% if they are fast or super friendly. Less if they forget anything or are not carrying seasoning/parmesan cheese. I deduct credit card charges (hello Garpez).

That would be the last time I would order Papa John's.

Depends on the distance from the restaurant to me and how quick they are. Typically around $4 for something close and $6 for something further away.

Head farther up the line in the chain of command. Some one will listen and take action. Heck, just off your post, they probably have lost 10 or more customers.

I will not go there again.

Papa Johns at Rock Prairie has really been slipping lately on their quality, and delivery times. They were my first call for delivery, but now I am reconsidering who to go with.

This is where you go to their Twitter feed to complain.
Also find Corporate phone number and complain about the location.

worked pizza delivery in high school. the delivery fee was paid out at the end of shift. the fee most definitely cut down on the tip amount.

LSCSN, did all or part of the delivery fee go to you as the driver, and if so, how much of it?

I tip $5. I'm usually ordering just for me so it's not much $-wise. If it's a busy day (graduation, super bowl etc). I'll tip more if they are pleasant or if my bill is larger.

this was years ago....the fee was still a dollar and we got a dollar for every delivery. a few years later, i heard the fee was raised to $1.50 and it still a dollar per delivery to the driver. there's no telling what it is now.

I complained on the corporate feedback form. We will see what that does.

Wasn't going to hold it against PJ until I was blown off by the manager.

Usually $5 but that is because I was a pizza pilot back in college.

I tip $5 on the rare times we get it delivered. But most of the time we just go through the Dominos drive thru and pick up 3 toppings at $7.99/each. Hard to beat that deal.

When a company fires their leader most of the time the company does not get better. Just saying. PJ is best commercial chain pizza out there but I'll not buy another one. Time for all the PC crap to come to an end.

+1. Not a fan of the crust at all. The service is enough to ensure I don't consider them.

Former delivery driver here.

Just fyi - it varies by chain, but most drivers DO NOT get the entirety of the delivery fee, only a portion - usually less than half. Drivers are using their own cars and paying for their own gas.

And in many cases, drivers are not making minimum wage.

If your house is very close to the store, a couple dollars is fine. But if it's a mile or more away, do $4-$5. Anything higher than five (unless it's a big order) is gravy.

If you can't afford to tip your driver decently, don't order for delivery.

This is the answer here.

Tip them $4 to $5 no matter how small your order.
If you can't afford that, then you shouldn't be ordering food for delivery.

It's the same concept as for restaurants. if you can't tip 15% to 20% at a sit-down restaurant then you shouldn't be going to a sit-down restaurant.

But screw Koppe Bridge and their tip jar at the front counter.
