Since y'all were so helpful with my last wedding related question, I come bearing another.

My fiance wants buttermilk pie instead of a groom's cake. We were just going to pick up a few from Kroger (it was his favorite), but it turns out they have discontinued their buttermilk pie. We have tried a few places around town, but haven't been able to find one that he likes as much.

So far we have tried HEB, Must Be Heaven, Pie in the Sky, Royer's and Hill Country BBQ. Right now his second choice is Hill Country BBQ, but it'd be a little easier if we could find something in town. Who else in town has buttermilk pie? We are on a daunting mission to try every one we can until we find a winner.

Mmmm....buttermilk pie. How is it that something as disgusting as buttermilk produces something as delicious as buttermilk pie?

Where is momma Lois who baked them with TLC, tasty loving care?
Unfortunately I think she is gone. Believe the one my wife bakes is from her time at 3c&red bandana, family loves I don't care for any of them.

Just so happens I bake for people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and buttermilk pie is on the menu. If you want to try one of mine, I can send you the order form if you like. Just email me at rprose1988@gmail.com if you want an order form. I'll be sending it out next week.

LOVE me a good buttermilk pie. My wife tries - bless her heart - but hasn't mastered the recipe.

Looks like we're making a trip to Readfield's soon.

You have time for taste testing! I'm not a giant fan of the place myself, but Royers in Round Top (and Brenham too, I think) is pretty highly regarded for all its pies.

Sorry to slightly derail, but anyone know if any of the pie places mentioned in town have Lemon Chess or Coconut Cream Pie? I will be in B/CS all weekend this weekend and I have a hankering!

Recipe always used and we make a bunch of these for family functions and around holidays

Buttermilk Pie

Ingredients:

1 10-inch pie shell unbaked

3 Cups Sugar
1/4 C flour
1/2 lb (2 sticks) butter, melted
6 eggs
1 C buttermilk
2 Tbs water
1 Tsp lemon juice
1 Tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350.
Whisk sugar and flour into melted butter, then add eggs one at a time.
Add liquid ingredients.

Pour filling into pie shell (I always seem to have extra filling that I bake in a dish)Place shell on cookie sheeet in preheated oven
Bake for at least one hour or until filling is set in the center of the pie.

I am sad to report that Readfield's take on buttermilk pie is disgusting. Flavorless. Texture was lacking. Crust was soggy. Had a metallic aftertaste.

I'd rather eat a plane-jane version from the Kroger or HEB bakery.

I hope Readfield's homemade (not frozen) pies are better.

Definitely good this old recipe from grandmas cookbooks. So one piece is enough for me.

I actually make this with Truvia in place of Sugar and it also good for Low Carb option. If you use Truvia since it's actually sweeter than Sugar about 1 1/2 to 2 Cups.
