My father has lower denture and has a problem keeping them in. The dentist has suggested that he get 4 implants to hold them in at about $8700.00 dollars. Has anyone had this done? Does it work? Is it worth the expense.

I have one implant and my wife has a couple of them. I've never had traditional dentures, but I'm happy with an implant that I don't have to take in and out.

Basically they put a titanium (I think) post in the bone and let the bone heal around it. Then they glue a fake tooth onto the post. From what I recall of what they told me beforehand, how well it works depends on how well the jaw handles having the post implanted.

I'd rather have my real teeth, but failure to develop good flossing habits when I was young and didn't have dental coverage removed that option.

If I was going to have implants I would check on having them done at the border in Mexico. Several friends have went down to the border towns and had them for 1/2 of the charge in the U.S. A number of towns are known for their dental implants.

Lower dentures are awful. There is no palate available for suction and there is usually a limited amount of bone. These things combined with the location of the tongue's connection to the floor of the mouth present a lot of issues with fitment.

Yes, the best way to improve this is to have dental implants placed. They can help stabilize the denture so it is still tissue supported but implant retained. It creates a more stable denture that makes thing like eating and speaking a lot easier.

Depending on how long teeth have been out it may be more difficult to have enough bone for four implants. Some patients can only have two, some can have none. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a direct message.

Jet Blue - the pain is minimal during the procedure, it is often referred to as less painful than the extraction of teeth. You may also choose to undergo IV sedation during the procedure to eliminate all pain.

rancher1953 - horrible idea. You'll spend more money cleaning up the mess than you will save. If you're really interested in saving money with implants, head to the UTHSC Houston dental school and have the work done, you will receive exceptional care at a reduced cost.

In addition , Ill fitting dentures will lead to a lack of nutrition . From a health standpoint , this is very important as one ages . I wouldn't hesitate to get the implants . Question for the dentist: does that price include the new denture ? Seek several quotes . Definitely seek quotes from oral surgeons or periodontist who are well-versed and successful with implants for a denture and not just single tooth implants .
Agree that the dental school is a great option . UT-San Antonio , or Houston , or TAMU in Dallas .

Yes, that's an appropriate price, no issues there.

dont like the fact I have an implant, however its never given me problems and I am glad I got it when I did instead of trying to make a bad tooth work.

Dr. Wiley locally does great work, however it is pricy.

Best in town. He had to re-do the implants that another well know local specialists did on my son. It was a long lengthy, painful process so be sure to pick someone to do it right the first time.
