Does anyone have any recommendations on local eyeglass shops? I have Superior Vision insurance through A&M and the shop associated with my doctor (Tx Regional Eye Center) seems to be super high. I'd love to go online, but Superior would consider it out of network <grr>

I've gotten glasses at both Eye Trends and Urban Optics with TAMU insurance.

Used Urban optics last month. Pricey but very pleased with the experience.

I have the same insurance plan through TAMU and I've had great experiences buying eyeglasses for my family at Eyemart Express (in the Kohl's shopping center).

I go to urban optics for my appointment, and to vision works for my frames (most peopld in my office do this). I have superior through a&m too.

I know a handful of people who go to greene eyes

We have had great experiences there, too. Good quality, fast service (under an hour on one pair), and very low prices.

It all boils down to quality. Glasses are NOT all the same. The truism "you get what you pay for" is very true for glasses. Sams, Stanton and Eyemart Express etc all use cheap frames and lenses. Cheap in price AND quality. If you only care about price, these places are for you. If you care about quality and service, you need to go to a reputable high quality place like Texas Regional or a private optometry practice like Urban.

Sam's for the win, at least so far. Customer service and knowledge of my insurance was better than the two more expensive places I went to that were clearly trying to maximize the amount of money they could get out of both the insurance and me. I got the most expensive option from Sam's, which still cost me less than half out of pocket than the mid-level options would of at the other places. I'll see how the quality is in a few days.

You probably already know this by now, but Superior Vision is anything but (superior). Sam's is a great place to buy large quantities of consumables. Prescription eyeglasses -- not so much.

I also have Superior Vision thru A&M. Got my progressive bi-focals with above basic lens for $60 out of pocket @ Lenscrafters. As long as you don't go crazy on the frames you buy then you should be good. Mine are designer but not as pricey as some of the other designer ones.

I think it depends on what you need glasses for. I only need a pair for nighttime driving and I buy my teens glasses at the cheap place because I refuse to pay much for things they will lose.

I have Superior insurance through TAMU as well. Recently purchased a pair of progressive lenses, all of the coatings they offer, and the frames I chose include a magnetic sunglasses clip on from Walmart. The total for my glasses after insurance was $151. My daughter's single vision glasses with all of the fancy coatings was $111. We are picking them up today, so not sure on the quality and durability yet.

I've purchased glasses from Walmart in the past, and they were just as good, if not better, than some of the more expense options out there, but it's been years. I will try to remember to post again next week after I've worn the new glasses for a bit.

I bought mine at Eye Trends, I felt like they had a lot. I didn't look when I went to Urban Optics since I wasn't specifically going for sunglasses.

Before I had vision insurance I was able to go to the ones at Scott and White for my specialist co-pay (which was like $45). Not sure if this is an option for you or not.
