So, kiss an historic 178 year old tree goodbye that doing its best to survive all the modern world has thrown at it because it's become too much trouble. Saving history is always great until it becomes too much of an annoyance, then it's time to toss it in the dumpster. But hey, we can make some great tchotchkes out of it for all the muckity-mucks to put on their walls and desks.

Kinda reminds of the Southside Historic District situation in CS. The ink wasn't even dry on the declaration before they handing out demolition permits like candy so developers could tear it all down to build Ag Shacks.

Dang, they could make a whole mini-park out of it using all saplings from that tree, the old tree as a centerpiece, and a nice, cedar rail fence. Sad that some people value economy over beauty at every turn, but the travesty of tearing down the old courthouse was just a symptom and not an accident.

The forest Service folks make it sound like it is just about dead even though the foliage looks nice. What would you have the county do?
And how on earth can you compare a dying tree in Bryan to development in CS?

The old courthouse was torn down 65 yrs ago...is anybody involved in that decision even still alive? Were you even born yet? I think we can move on at this point.

There are things that can be done, just that it appears that no one wants to be bothered with it.

As for the comparison to the Southside Historic District, the destruction of historic landmarks (be they trees or old homes), for the sake of inconvenience, and/or the pursuit of a quick buck, is detrimental to the community, as once they are gone, they are gone forever.

It is a tree, and in poor condition as per the experts. Do you honestly think taking steps to prolong its life is a responsible use of tax dollars? Do you really think it is responsible to use tax dollars on a tree outside a courthouse where they are trying to decide if we can afford another court?
So far as south side development goes. If I own an old house and feel that my property is best used by tearing down the house and building rental property, what gives you the right to stop that?
Maybe tearing down that old house isn't detrimental to the community at all, maybe it is actually good for the community.

If the tree is dying go ahead now and pull all of the suckers from the main trees roots and transplant them. They are a burden on the main tree anyway. Once you have a few suckers established pull the old tree and replant one of the suckers in its place. Grow the other suckers offsite as future replacements if the original transplant dies.

Run the old trunk through a kiln to kill off any critters and make a couple of benches / tables from the main trunk to use in the courthouse.
Agree making something good out of the wood is a great thing to do. Seems I recall lots of items like knife handles and such coming from the Treaty Oak when it died.

I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled.

There is an Aggie who has funded an endowed scholarship at TAMU by selling saplings from acorns of the Century Oak.

I do not know what type of cedar it is, but the average lifespan of an eastern red cedar is about 150 years. Some can live to 300.

What is the point of pouring funds into a tree that is well above the average life span?

Hopefully they plant Old Tree, Jr. in that spot and it thrives for many decades. It's the Circle of Life.
