On Thursday, the president's casket will arrive in College Station by train, accompanied by Bush family members and close friends. The train will unload at the railroad stop at Wellborn Road and George Bush Drive.

The funeral procession will travel on George Bush Drive toward the Bush Library Complex.

Texas A&M students, faculty and staff, and the community are invited to view the procession. The interment ceremony will be closed to public viewing.

Some areas of campus will be closed in the days leading up to the burial. All of campus will be closed on the day of the burial.

Make your plans now. Campus closed Thursday.

What railroad stop at Wellborn and George Bush Drive? Are they going to stop at the abandoned Amtrak platform behind Callaway Villas?

EDIT: Glad to see UP4141 doing the work, I once got into an argument with a railfan several years ago who claimed 4141 had been scrapped when I had just seen it go through town.

There's a little platform by the McDonalds - a remnant of our brief Amtrak service. Or at least there used to be.

They've been replacing railroad ties up and down Wellborn for over a week now. That was planned before.

Any idea where we can go view the procession. Guess it'll be down bush drive going to library. Can we park at Olsen or reed?

UP4141 is already at the Westfield yard in Spring.

Public viewing area and campus closure notice.

George Bush Drive is NOT shown as a viewing area.

No, it isn't.

And the areas to "view" the train are dangerous.

I would wager to say the involved entities have been planning this for quite some time. Wellborn Road in the viewing areas will likely be shut down to vehicular traffic.

I went out to the library earlier and they are putting up fence all the way out to 2818 I guess for security but it is a private graveside service. National news media trucks showing up also.

The same was done for Barbara Bush's funeral.

The feds will ultimately be in charge so I assume this will be a lot more restricted than Barbara's procession was.

It's a good idea to avoid the area Thursday.

I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled.

As another poster said, hopefully they will shut down Wellborn road. If not, people will be crossing that road with traffic. Even if they do, that is not a very long viewing area for what will probably be a large crowd.

If they had opened George Bush as a viewing area, the crowd would be a lot more spread out.

There really isn't anywhere to view it on the west side of the tracks.

Taken today at Westfield yard. All cleaned up and ready to go. !

Last I heard, offloading of the train will take place near the parking lot north of the west campus garage.
Gigemchicken90

That was the original plan and why tailgating was changed for this fall. I've been told it is too wet to use the area where they had planned for the offloading to take place.

Any idea where anyone is going to attempt to park/try to watch? That stretch of Wellborn from 2818-George Bush isn't exactly the easiest for viewing purposes/parking. I assume all of Wellborn will be closed from those points. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Perhaps the parking lot for the park (Tarrow) adjacent to the baseball fields between Luther and Holleman? It is a bit of a jaunt but not too bad. I think you can access it from Holleman.

From what I hear, there will be a UP locomotive running 1 mile out front to make sure the track is clean, then the funeral train, then another locomotive 1 mile behind as a sweeper. Apache helo escort, with local LEOs blocking every crossing.

Just to see the train, you might have better luck in Magnolia, navasota, or somewhere along 1774 or 105 where the track is visible from the highway.

Apaches? Considering the sitting president doesn't have that kind of escort I am gonna have to say probably not.
Rexter

Beats me. That info comes from the Westfield yard. But I'd think if TAMU can get an Apache flyover for a game, someone could get one for Bush.

I mean we want to be there for anything we can. For Mrs Bush we setup in front of the police DEPT and saw the motorcade and family easily. This is obviously a different situation but want my kids to be able to witness in some fashion.

Depending on the dignitaries on the train with the family, that might be unusual. PD closing every crossing is standard USSS procedure for presidential motorcades.

In 1997, when the Bush family arrived via train for the opening of the library, Wellborn Rd. was shutdown for an hour or so. It was done for security purposes...but the public could stand in the road to view the arrival as there was no vehicle traffic. I would imagine they will do something similar.

The feds are in charge! Yes this has been planned for many, many years.....even before a Bush appointee became the university leader. As much as I would love to go watch the procession I think I will just watch the live stream on line to avoid the hassle.

Saw this on the politics board thread. Updated arrival time of the train is now 3:25.

Yup. It was on ice for the last 4 years. It's in Spring now. Since campus is officially closed, you can park in any lot. My first choice would be the roof of the West Campus parking garage, or the roof of the new garage by the MSC. But, it would not surprise me if those positions are closed for security reasons.
