Crime Alert Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assault

Campus crime alerts and timely warnings to the community comply with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Texas A&M University Police Department is investigating accusations from four Texas A&M employees (staff, non-students) who reported that their supervisor also a staff member (non-faculty, non-student) sexually harassed them, and in one case sexually assaulted them.

Case number 18-0706-0006

On July 6, 2018 an officer from the University Police Department was summoned to the TAMU Human Resources office to take a staff report of sexual harassment and assault filed by the staff member. The victim stated a supervisor, employed by Texas A&M Vet Med-Teaching Hospital, had been making remarks to her about sexual acts. Then, while working, the supervisor confronted the victim and pushed her to a remote spot and began making strong sexual comments and asking questions. The victim, fearing for her safety, showed the suspect a pocket knife and told him to leave. The supervisor threatened her job if he was reported. The victim reported the supervisor to the human resources department.

Case number 18-0707-0005 and 18-0707-0006

On July 7, 2018 officers contacted two other employees of this same supervisor based on information obtained in the initial investigation. Both employees reported similar experiences with the supervisor. They reported this supervisor would make strong sexual overtures, graphic sexual comments to them, and at times touching them inappropriately. When this supervisor was rebuffed, the victims would be assigned to work in an area with no air conditioning and far from the rest of the facility. The victims believed this also allowed the supervisor to be more bold since there were no cameras in this area.

Case number 18-0716-0005

On July 16, 2018 a fourth victim, a former employee, came forward to report sexual assaults to the police department. This victim stated this supervisor began using his power and influence over her 27 years ago. He sexually assaulted her several times both on and off campus during this time. He used his influence over her while she worked for TAMU and recently threatened to derail her retirement if reported.

These cases are currently under investigation. Anyone having information pertaining to these or other incidents is encouraged to contact the Texas A&M University Police Department at 979-845-2345.

Sexual assault and sexual harassment are not the fault of the victim. Only a perpetrator can prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment. While a university is required under the Clery Act to notify the public of such reports, it is also our responsibility to provide information regarding protective measures.

Sexual offenders often exhibit danger signals, including:

  • Individuals who exhibit controlling behaviors
  • Individuals who become angry when personal limits are set
  • Individuals who ignore personal limits set by others
  • Individuals who deliberately and repeatedly ignore personal limits set by others and continue to make sexual advances

If you are being sexual harassed at work:

  • Report and document any sexual harassment (this includes threats of your job for non-compliance or favors for compliance);
  • Report and document if you are being harassed because of your gender or people are being treated differently because of gender;
  • Keep emails, cards, or notes from the harasser;
  • Report to Ethics Point at 888-501-3850 or http://ethicspoint.com; and
  • Report to http://tellsomebody.tamu.edu/

The safety of our community does not have borders. It is the goal of every law enforcement agency to protect the citizens that we serve. Be the eyes and ears of your police department. This is awful. I posted about this earlier on the GB. I glad they finally reported it, it is just sad in this day and age he got away with it for so long.

Sad part is that the amount of sexual harassment you're allowed to get away with is directly proportional to your position in the university. Had a friend that was a low-level staff member get accused of sexual harassment by a rather fluffy woman that wanted to him to leave his much more attractive wife for her, and he was fired the same day without an investigation.

Looks like if he'd been higher up, not only would he have not been fired, but he could've actually harassed people and gotten away with it!

Well yeah. A low-level employee isn't really worth the effort of an investigation.
