My dad is being discharged from the hospital tomorrow and will be using a hospice provider to manage his end of life care. One of the providers we are considering is Traditions Hospice. Has anyone had any experience with their services they would be willing to share? Thanks for your help.

None with Traditions, and haven't heard anything against them.

I would vouch for Hospice Brazos Valley -

http://www.hospicebrazosvalley.org/about/

They are the only not-for-profit hospice in the area. I like places with a non-profit mission in healthcare. Since hospice is nearly 100% Medicare and Medicaid payments, the margins are slim. NFP doesn't have the same pressure to return on those slim margins that for-profit does. I also know some of the leadership and staff at Hospice Brazos Valley and know they are very experienced and dedicated. They did a excellent job in taking care of my family member in their last days. This isn't to knock anyone else - I am sure there is talent and dedication in the other hospice providers as well. Good luck dealing with a difficult time.......

I agree with above poster. I have no experience with Traditions but Brazos Valley Hospice was wonderful when we brought my MIL to our home on hospice. I can't say enough good things about them. Their Pastor speaks once in a while at Connecting Point Church and I love listening to him speak.

Sounds like we face similar issues. Just called Hospice Brazos Valley today.

Dad has Traditions for some home health and is in decline.

I went with Brazos Valley because of recommendations from co-workers and friends who used them. I have also been to a few casino nights at the Expo Center where they raise money.

They seem like good people.

Going through all of this, I now see the business side of medicine. Cancer, dementia, and just growing old is big business.

So far I do not feel like Hospice Brazos Valley is in it just to make money.

Per OP, for profit hospices will typically manage services in in manner that provides best financial outcomes for them. This will impact what equipment, medications, etc. and sources of those products and services to maximize Medicare and supplemental coverage payments to them.

Certainly there are exceptions, though this is the typical business model that many clients accept or do not know better.

1000x for Hospice. They were on service for two of my grandparents, my mother, and currently a cousin. They are the absolute best!!!! I couldn't imagine using any other provider. They service uninsured patients as well. They have a little place called "Hospice Mart" that accepts donations, kinda like a Goodwill. The proceeds from the sale of merchandise goes to offset some of the expenses for uninsured patients. I quit having garage sales along time ago and donate all my stuff to them.

***in a nut shell, they are awesome****

Very appreciative of Hospice Brazos Valley! But my mom was an in patient so not familiar with the out patient side of it! They certainly made an unbearable experience a little more comfortable! Very thankful for that! I also quit the garage sales and make all my donations to their little thrift store.

Hospice Brazos Valley is the only non-profit Hospice provider in the Brazos Valley. Patients do not pay anything.

Patients don't pay anything for hospice if covered by medicare, regardless if it's a non-profit......

I am pretty sure that there may be OOP for very limited parts of hospice under Medicare (Hospice is covered under Medicare Part A - same part that covers hospitals) . You are very correct about that being true for both For Profit and Not For Profit. It matters not - just like it matters not for the Med, B/SW or St Joe. They all have to accept the same from Medicare.....

Curious if you know any examples of "limited parts". We recently interviewed Encompass Hospice representative and they were very clear that there is no cost to the patient - everything covered 100%. The comment was even made that a majority of patients chose to quit paying for any supplemental insurance because it is no longer needed.
