Howdy All,

My wife wants to make a few planters for the front of the driveway out of wine barrels. She picked up some cheap faux barrels from Home Depot that look ok, but clearly aren't made well and will surely break in a season or two.

I've got calls into the Messina Hof and will try Peach Creek when they open, but do you know of anywhere else that sells (gives? ) spent wine / whiskey barrels for such things?

Thanks and have a great weekend all.

I believe that I saw some real wood ones at HEB earlier this season.

Tower Point?

Thanks, I'll do a drive by there and see what they got.

Lowes has real half barrels. Got one a month ago, stamped with the Jack Daniels distillery marks on the end. You could still smell the whiskey in the char. Man I love that smell.

Try calling Rio Brazos Distillery. Last time I was out there they had barrels for sale.

Legit barrels are getting harder and harder to find. Distillers have found other uses for them in the industry, including aging beer in them, other liquor gets aged in them etc. They aren't cheap anymore and the demand for high end Bourbon has skyrocketed so they aren't turning loose of them.

Just remember that you have to keep them decently moist or the rings will fall apart. I am not talking daily watering, but even during the winter I would hit them with a hose from time to time even if you don't have plants in them.
