I like Bill but really feel he is hiding from his constituents by doing the calls. I do not care what he says the reason is.

Was confused by that too. I went to Chet Edwards's town halls where he was yelled at, and Bill is way more popular so I don't understand the problem.

Like a growing number of his Republican colleagues Flores wants the control of the phone meeting, Allows them to answer only the questions they want to answer, questions their aides put together for them to promote the party view.

Already over.

It says you can email questions to WTAW for a radio townhall that's on Thursday (doesn't say what time). That definitely lets them pick and choose questions

Have you not watched the past month or so the shipped in democratic outrage that has happened in previous town halls? Why would any republican willingly do that?

When the interviewed him on KBTX he said he didn't have time to do the live townhall.

The House in recessed now for two weeks and then have another two weeks recess in May. I suspect he would have time to have a live townhall meeting if he truly wanted one.

Not necessarily Flores, but I bet many of the Reps have time to take their across the country or overseas "fact finding trips" during the recesses.

Politicians being politicians.

In the current climate, a open townhall would likely be a circus, with the "outrage" often basically the hope for "video my outburst, and make me famous for 15 seconds".

Either way, it may work FOR Flores if he went with a public townhall....get his views/responses out (pro or con), and reveal any disruptions from the talking-points crowd as a reason to keep their party out of office.

I expect normal townhall meetings to resume, when most of the millennials get distracted by the latest Iphone being released...

Why would anyone want to go to one of these events where it is filled with bussed in protestors, many from out of district? They are nothing but a bunch of Soros funded astroturf liberals and Obama's Organize For America.

They even have a website that provides all of the blueprints of how to cause trouble.

Notice the first call Flores got? Some liberal from Austin wanting to know why Flores won't demand Trump's tax returns.

I found it odd he took a lot of questions from Austinites too, as they are not in the district. I'm not a Flores fan but I think he handled himself fine and while I think it's cowardice to not face his district in person it makes sense for him not to create a situation that would make him look bad. Remember what Democrat district townhalls looked like in 2009 and 2010? That's what Republican district townhalls are beginning to look like now. The Koch brothers didn't pay those protesters to show up then, and Soros isn't paying any of these to show up now. The last Flores-less townhall meeting in College Station was packed with locals, both pro and anti-Flores, who weren't paid a dime to be there. At least I wasn't paid to be there, let's say that.

Most people who attend town halls are olds.

Maybe due to it being on social media (FB), there were plenty of non-olds spewing vitriol in their posts last night. To actually attend a town hall, who knows...

It's absolutely his job to meet with constituents to hear their concerns.

I wish someone would have asked him if it was still okay to have only eight SC justices like he suggested last year.

Actually, a small part North Austin is in his district. http://flores.house.gov/district/interactivemap.htm

So that excuses them from hearing from the rest of their constituents by resorting to a forum where they control who has a voice and they can censor the questions to suit themselves?

I admit that while I think he should do them in person, I agree that it's not technically part of the job, And I have never been to one. I guess it's weird or hypocritical of me to judge a pol based on how he handles himself at an event I wouldn't go to. But I do to some extent even though it's far from my main basis for deciding.

With respect to putting up with the astroturfing: Hasn't Flores been doing these phone based town halls for as long as he's been in Congress, not just this year? I vaguely recall being annoyed at phone calls to our home inviting us to join a conference call.

Edit to add: did anyone here actually call in?

If it actually makes it constructive....yes.

And that is for Reps / Senators of either party.

Meeting with constituents does not = shouting. People that want to act like children can always be escorted out of a meeting. And for all these people worried about people being shipped in, just make someone show their voter ID to prove they live in the district before letting them in.

If you don't have the backbone to listen to your constituents face-to-face -- most of whom are going to be in support of you anyway -- it doesn't speak well of you. You are in Washington to represent the people in your district. The least you can do is meet with them to answer questions and address their concerns.

Is it not possible/legal to only give entry to people that reside in the district? Seems like that'd be easy to do with a driver's license and smartphone to compare the address. Limiting it to constituents (especially in a very red district) would cut out a lot of the crap and allow things to get done and legitimate questions answered.
mgreen
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I would love him to attend and just listen. Do not even speak. Listen to what your constituents think and feel. I already known his stock answers. Politicians listening and not speaking should be the new trend.
