He came up with this on his own. He is basically his streets Clark griswold and has tons of extra light and decoration. He was talking about driving around and finding houses who have kids but can't afford to decorate. He is in his late 80s and strong as a horse but is this something I should steer him away from?

Can you explain a little more clearly what you're looking for? Are you asking if it's a good idea for your dad to give away Christmas lights?
Sounds like his Dad wants to do the actual decorating.
Yes he is very active and wants to decorate the house of someone who is in need. Wants to spread a little Christmas cheer.
Of course you never know, but this sounds like it might present some serious liability issues for both parties. Kudos to your dad for trying to spread some Christmas cheer but if it were my dad I'd probably discourage him from doing it.

I wouldn't do that with any of the electrical decorations.
These are a lot easier than setting up lights, and they look great. Maybe you can talk him into donating some of these instead.

I think its a neat idea. How do you know if you're dealing with people who can't afford lights vs. don't want to have them though?

Seems like he could contact a church or something and ask for a recommendation of a family in need who would appreciate the gesture.
Maybe Habitat for Humanity would have the names of a few new homeowners who would like to have someone help decorate?
