Papa bear brought up the rear. His breathing raised hairs on my neck!

Absaroka wilderness, along the North Fork of the Shoshone River, outside of Cody, WY (a few miles from the east gate of Yellowstone).

Absaroka County Sherriff is a great guy. Think his names Walt. You may give him a call. He may send out that pretty blonde or his best friend Henry Standing Bear.

In all seriousness… if I'm in your shoes, I'm not sure if I'm terrified or in awe.

5 Cougars showing up would have been a great start to a movie.

Looks like mama was getting her cubs to safety. In the news just this morning there's a story about two grizzly cubs being killed and partially eaten by a male near the Coulter Bay campground in Grand Teton NP.

Awesome video.
I went on 2 Mulie hunts with an outfitter who is not too far from you if I understand your location correctly. We hunted the Absaroka not too far from the east border of Yellowstone we saw Grizzlies 2 or 3 days out of each 7 day hunt.

Mama and 4 cubs that haven't been kicked out on their own yet? She needs to be named Fertile Myrtle...

That fourth one isn't a cub. I think it's a male wanting the female to hurry up and get ready to breed again, which she will once her cubs are gone.

Here's the story I mentioned a few posts ago about males killing cubs. That sow, while in defensive mode, is about the most dangerous creature on the planet.

Very cool. Grizzlies in your yard. We got folks that complain and freak out about birds and small animals being in their yards…… but you got Grizz in yours!
Nature at her best. Thanks for sharing.

Cool. Of course, in that country, you always have to be hyper-aware.

Never seen Grizzlys in the wild - only in zoos. Seen tons of black bears, but not scared of them in the least. They are wussies.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

An old friend of mine and I went camping in the Beartooth Mountains for 2 weeks in 1987. Near Cody. We never saw any grizzlies. My buddy did accidentally get between a moose sow and her calf one day. It was pretty uncomfortable for a few mins but he slowly and quietly backed away and there was no incident . Wildlife was a little weird that yr tho because there were wildfires .

Really liked that Cody area but have only been back once since then . I bet property prices are high now

My guess as well. Male at the end is hunting.

AND someone (dem??) wanted to "re-introduce" a Grizzley bear population into the Pacific Northwest of Washington state. [Probably introducing significant jail time and/or fines for killing on to protect one's own or loved ones life.]
Further, I recall reading about Lewis & Clark in their "Voyage of Discovery" of the Louisiana Purchase where it took a multitude of participation of nearly all there to stop one with their "muzzle loading rifles" to stop one attack.

Not trying to derail this thread but since you mentioned it, I can't help but post these.

Back in February, we went skiing in Los Alamos and stopped to see Longmire's cabin on the last day. At the ranger station, the rangers asked us why we were there and we said to see Longmire's cabin. We drive down there and while we were looking at it, one of the Rangers drives up and asks if we want to see the inside. I guess it's pretty rare to go in it.

As a side note, the Absaroka wilderness is different than Absaroka County. Walt mentions it in the episode where they find the treasure hunter's body in the tree.

Sir, I believe that is referred to as Wookin' Pa Nub.

Also, NM is used as a stand in for a lot of places. Lone Survivor's mountain scenes were filmed there, so was the sceen in Lonesome Dove when Woodrow decided that they had arrived and this was where they would build the cabin. That place is near Angel Fire.

We'll be staying in Cody in a few days, currently in Custer to hit up Mt Rushmore tomorrow.

Anything we shouldn't miss while we are in the area? Other than avoiding where the grizzlies are, of course.

Don't miss the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Five museums under one roof. Smithsonian level quality. Thank me later.

Shoot old historic (and modern guns) at the Cody Firearms Experience.

Dinner at the Irma Hotel

Drive 50 miles up the North ForK HWY (up to the east gate of Yellowstone) along the Shoshone River. Easy drive, Theodore Roosevelt supposedly called it the most scenic highway in America. Bison, Big Horn Sheep, Elk, and occasional bear, wolves, and moose. Right before the Yellowstone gate, stop at Pahaska Tepee for lunch (check their website to make sure they are open) and peak into Buffalo Bill's hunting lodge. Allow 2-3 hours with stops.

Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

the tunnels between Custer and Mt Rushmore are an engineering wonder - great trip and similar to ours years ago that started in Custer, rolled on to Yellowstone and finished in Tetons. Enjoy
