Has anybody on the OB gone to a LR school in Texas they would recommend?

T-Fork up in the panhandle and Lloyd Hill of Genesis Rifles in Dallas/Ennis both look to have LR classes offered. I think I remember hearing about one around the Austin area as well but don't remember the name of the outfit putting the classes on. I guess if I really wanted to learn to shoot in the wind, the panhandle would be the best place to learn with most likely the windiest conditions.

I am really just wanting to learn how to correctly collect data to build a reliable D.O.P.E. chart and learn to make proper windage and elevation adjustments to become a more accurate shooter. Any suggestions on classes would be really appreciated.

I went to this guy a while back and was happy. Its one on one and probably cheaper than most of the schools.

I play in this world a good bit (long range shooting, not instruction). Looooooots of hacks out there tbh. Rifles Only is a good recommendation. The one I've been to personally is https://www.cprifle.com/ which I would recommend in a heartbeat. Not sure if he's still doing classes at Blue Steel in Logan, NM which almost counts as Texas.


A lot of these "classes" have a goal or advertise students getting hits at OnE tHoUsAnD yards!1!!! when in reality it's usually harder to find a place to shoot 1,000y than it is to get a hit at 1,000y.


I kinda think you just have to decide what your goals and budget is. I would either go all in or just good enough. All in being looking for a 2 or 3 day course and not restricting to TX. Traveling to a class with well known, experienced (not "sniper") instructor. So potentially $2k+.

Just good enough would be finding someone to talk you through stuff, which really could be done in an afternoon. Collecting data, reading solvers, making adjustments, base fundamentals, are not overly difficult. Just finding someone who knows and is willing, and a place.



What is your rifle setup? That can play into decision too.

Just ordered the Seekins Precision Havak Element in 7PRC last Friday. Should be here on Thursday. Going to run an AB Raptor 8 .30 cal can that will just live on the gun, ordered it last Friday too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to put the Huskemaw Blue Diamond 5-20x50 on it. I'll be going with Seekins rings on it as well, have 4 other sets and really like them so far.

It should weigh in right around 8 lbs 4 oz before a bipod. Not sure what bipod I'll put on it yet.

Fierce firearms out of Utah offers a long range school that is impressive. We give one away annually at our CCA Banquet and folks have loved it. Their rifles don't suck either. It's not uncommon for them to have you hitting steel at 1000 yards on day 1. Many folks out to 1400-1700 yards by weekend end. I know it's not in Texas, but I would love to take the course and win the gun!

If you want to venture into Southern CO, I may have a place for you. I went there and I'm just waiting on confirmation they're doing the school again this spring. Shot out to 1450 yards and had really good training. Plus it's CO so that doesn't suck.

Great hunting gun. I had an Element in 6.5PRC and run a Havak PH2 in 6cm for competitions now.

It's not an ideal gun to take to a long range class that you're putting 250+ rounds down range and working on fundamentals. If you want to just get comfortable with that gun, then I'd look for a cheaper, one afternoon, 4 hrs, type class. Something that will make sure it's put together and shooting how it should, collect some data on the ammo you're going to run, and make sure it's true out to distance.

Otherwise most true long range classes will recommend 6.5cm or less from a recoil standpoint. It becomes even more of a hindrance if you get into any kind of positional shooting.



Not sure how far you've gotten on the 7PRC, I have a custom one I'm hunting currently. If you're going factory ammo just know that Hornady switched powders maybe a year ago and their velocity dropped a bunch. The Federal ammo shooting the 175 ELDX is generally good for about another 75-100 FPS over the Hornady with the same projectile. That difference really won't make any kind of meaningful change at normal hunting distances, but just fyi.

Buddy of mine who played with a lot of SFG guys over in Afghanistan said that many of the shooters he dealt with over there spoke very highly of Rifles Only, either because they went through the course themselves or knew one or more of the instructors there personally.

So the T-Fork website suggested learning the fundamentals and doing most of your shooting on a short action like a 6.5CM or .308 due to shooting 200+ rounds and then the last day if you have a magnum rifle you would like to shoot with instruction and feedback they would help you put 40 rounds down the pipe.

I have a Ruger American Predator with a Magpul hunter stock in 6.5CM with a Timney trigger I think I would take to do most of the shooting. I've got a Vortex Viper HSLR 4-16x44 with a BDC reticle on it. Think I could get by doing my shooting with that setup?

Way better, and waaaaay cheaper. Good call on taking both though and getting your hunting gun dialed with some support if needed.

That gun will be fine, so long as you can mount a bipod to it. The scope will be ok, they should have you dialing for all your elevation. Windage will be tricky, just have to figure out what the subtens are for your reticle since you should be holding for that.

All guns are different of course, but my go to starting out on any 6.5cm is factory Hornady 140 ELDM. Should be able to find it for under $40 a box. If you don't already have some picked out for your gun.

Bipod choices are endless. I have north of $2.5k in just bipods. There's nothing wrong with a plain old Harris. I would stay away from any of the Magpul options. Atlas are fine, but if I was in that price range I'd pay a little more for a TBAC bipod.

Clayton a good dude. Who I would recommend.

I'd read and try to understand as much as you can before taking a lesson so you're prepared to understand the info you will receive at the lesson. The magpul Art of the Precision Rifle has a pretty good breakdown of dope, zero, parallax and understanding wind.

I've taken lessons from Clayton at ATX precision and Aaron Roberts at Roberts Precision Rifles and they are both great.

FTW out in the hill country is great. It's hunting oriented - they teach you to shoot off sticks, kneeling and the like. You figure out how far you can shoot in a number of situations. That said you can also shoot out to 1,500 yds.

2nd for Lloyd Hill Genesis rifles. He built me a 28 nosler with Huskemaw glass. Fun to shoot! Lloyd is a good guy too.

Thanks for posting. After saying good bye to her older sister for 5 years on elk hunts I have an 8 year old chomping at the bit to go. I think I will do this course with her in the next 18 months as part of her preparation and my continued training.

Hasty supported positions is a huge influence on accuracy.
