Just read this news. Bad deal. Will be interesting to see what ultimately happened. I've never fished or hunted Alaska, but it's pretty high on my bucket list. Would like to do some duck hunting and some type of combo fishing package for a few days.

I have fished Alaska once. My BIL who used to be a pilot based out of there set it up. We were staying in a NFS cabin. Half went in a float plane, the other half went in a rented outboard aluminum v-hull with most of our gear. It was about an hour or so drive with no guide, or gps, only maps.
We rent the boat, load it up. The rental guy says, good luck, hope to see you soon… it turned out great!
Bottom line, if you are going out there, you have to know the risks.
Also funny, my BIL says, never land anywhere in Alaska, unless you are prepared to stay.

I have fished Alaska 4 times for a week each time. The primary danger comes from daily flying in single engine planes, going over mountains, crossing the sea to Kodiak Island and landing and taking off on short sandbars. The other danger is getting swept away in a fast running river while wearing waders. Over an 8 year period, our lodge lost 2 damn good, experienced pilots. One in a crash when he ran out of unimproved runway, the plane turned upside down and he drowned. The other was swept away by a river. Bears are a concern as well.

As far as halibut fishing, the Alaskan seas are more quiescent than the Gulf.

Having said all that, I would still highly recommend doing it. The fishing is awesome and the views are breathtaking.

In case you're a moron, like me, quiescent = inactive, latent, passive, idle, more calmerer…..

The 4 missing just got lost. Never to return.

Last place on earth you want to be is swimming in the water. Your life span is reduced to seconds due to the cold/hypothermia without a survival suit.
