What is the alternative? Trump as an incumbent was absolutely running again. If the GOP tried to put up opposition he would have run as an independent.

Trump gets a lot of the blame for this as well for setting a bad precedent. This is a lot less tennable for Biden to regulate 2A by EO if the Pro 2A party didn't already "break the hearts", so to speak.

I think the attempt is to serialize everything and require background checks (make 80% lowers illegal). Talking about the kits might be intended to scare and maybe even set up more down the road. I just got the impression this was specifically about 80% lowers this time.
