Such good memories. You could hear the DDT truck down the street just like the ice cream truck. Grab yo bikes and let's roll!

I assume that's from a movie. Which one?

Never saw that, but in the 1960s and 70s, my hometown and the others around Plainview were sprayed with malathion to kill mosquitos. Encephalitis was a bigger immediate threat than pesticide reactions.

They used a Beech Model 18. Was very cool to get your town bombed from 200 feet by this bad boy.

While looking for the photo, I was surprised to see they were still in use, spraying mosquitos.

ha ha

my Dad had a strategic reserve of Lindane and Diazanon into the early 90's. That stuff worked! you never appreciate how previous generations managed their house until those methods are lost. Being a homeowner now, I just don't think the stuff on the market now is not nearly effective.

We had the Diazanon. It definitely worked better than the stuff we can get now.

I may or may not have some Chlordane. Termites, fire ants, crazy ants, killer jungle ants, you name it and if it's an insect it will kill it. And possibly grow you a third arm at the same time.

Funny story about a chemist who brewed up his own batch of DDT during WWII when everything was rationed. Evidently it's not that hard to make if you know what you're doing.

I think that, to be very honest with you, I do believe that we should have rightly believed, but we certainly believe that certain issues are just settled.

Chlordane, Lindane, Malathion, Diazinon. Those names make me nostalgic.

Pour one out.

On second thought, if you have some, DON'T pour it out unless you're pouring it into a sprayer.

Also, in the late 80s - early 90s, there was a product for fire ants called Logic. It wasn't poison, it was a bait with fertility inhibitor that the workers took to the queen and sterilized her, IIRC. One broadcast per year with spot treatments around the boundary of the yard kept me fire-ant free. Not sure why it went off the market.

My cousin gashed his head open on a mailbox doing that. I can still remember that sound like it was yesterday.

I own an old house where one of those glorious concoctions was sprayed all up under the house, to where a terminate inspector commented on it and told me what it was. Still going strong and we NEVER have had even an ant crawl into that house.

They filmed that movie in Smithville, TX. That is one weird movie. The kicker is that the movie review from Roger Ebert is better than the movie (in my opinion at least) The review is worth a read for sure.

Fun fact. The tree in that movie that was the focus came off of our land outside of town. Huge production to move it in to town. Other than that, that movie was weird. I never did watch it all the way through

And they used to spray that stuff all over town when I was growing up. I remember watching the sprayer go by at little league practice.

Bumping rather than a new thread for a related topic.

Cleaning out a garage storage closet and found a gallon of Diazanon the previous owner left (possibly forgot he had 15 years ago). The label is far too faded to read, and I can't find much online other than it's banned.

Will this kill mosquitos? The few labels online I've found make no mention of mosquitos. If so, any idea what rate to apply in a Chaplin hose end sprayer, or mixing in a backpack?
