Thanks. I had bought a couple of the irrigation packages last year that I was going to try this year that are similar to that, but use a water hose to water it.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Is ~24" enough pressure for the whole system? How long does it take to drip a particular amount of water, especially if you're running low?

I have a rain barrel and was considering using gravity, but was concerned about pressure not being enough.

I would use these calculators to figure out if it will work.

Hailed out yesterday by a 40 minute long, tennis ball sized hail storm.

Good luck to all and enjoy your home grown tomatoes... Will try again in the fall.

Location? Sorry to hear about the storm!

About 3 hours is what I expect, but I haven't timed it as there's no need. The barrel lives out at the garden and I use a second barrel to haul/transfer water.

As long as the barrel is higher than the drippers, gravity will do it's work. I do want to build a better/higher platform for the barrel but just haven't gotten there yet.

What's wrong with my peas? Pink eye purple hulls I bought at the local feed store. New garden first crop planted in this row. Peas sprouted and were looking normal for a few weeks now they all look like this. No evidence of insect pets that I can see.

The insects can come in, eff it all up, and leave before you notice. Usually the plants will produce through the damage and continue growing. As long as the peas don't have two buttholes it's probably fine.

We did a soil test earlier this year and had no nitrogen in the soil.

So in true fashion went and bought a bag of blood meal, didn't read the directions, and put the whole bag on our garden.

It's very clear where the BM was poured in as we don't have anything growing there (started with seeds).

Is there anything we can do to utilize those areas? Buying some established plants to put in? Or should I just dig it out and start with fresh dirt?

Got everything mulched with a leaf mold compost, things seem to be taking off finally. I have a mix of tomatoes, variety of peppers, basil for now. I wanted some cucumbers for eating and pickling, but these beds haven't done great with flowers over the last few years.

I think the "bed mix" soil I bought locally was too hot and wasn't exactly balanced or aged. So I did a test test this spring and added as they noted. As we plan to move in the next couple years this is more of a test that anything to get back into gardening.

Garden is almost entirely in. Still tilling and making larger. Still have plants to put in.

Meanwhile, I hand pollinated my first lady flower of the season today! Still learning a lot via google and this thread, but thought you'd be happy to know I haven't killed all your sugar pumpkin seeds yet!

I haven't even planted my pumpkins yet. That'll be in another month or so.

OK, so irrigation question.I'm looking for a relatively efficient way to install irrigation into my garden. I have 19 rows which are roughly 30 feet long each. Somebody give me the quickest and most efficient way to do

I don't know if the whole thing is fairly level or generally slopes one way. But a lot the farms on the Brazos flood the valleys between the crops. Deeper watering, less frequently. I think it also allows the upper part of the root system to breathe better. I'd think a pvc pipe alone one end with holes drilled at the valleys, let a hose on a timer run and see how long it takes to flood the rows. Then set the timer accordingly in the future.

If it's generally flat, you might wind up with it being more wet on one end vs the end farthest from the pvc pipe. Not sure if it's the best option, but it's what I see gamers watering thousands of acres with in the Brazos bottoms.

Yeah, probably not the best idea. Looking more for a drip irrigation solution. It is relatively level, and there is a slight slope from one end of the row to the other end of the row.

Where's your water source? Maybe as simple as taking a main trunk along the high side with individual runs down the length of the row.

Green beans are about done, question is, what can you plant this time of year when I pull these up?

question on squash and zuchinni. We have harvested tons of both, but worms have now eaten the stocks on all but one zuchinni plant. How do you prevent those worms from killing the vines?

You don't. Once you get to that point, you're done IMHO.

Is there any place where I could buy something like that in person? I really don't want to order something over the Internet.

You can get everything at either Lowes or Home Depot in the irrigation isle.

As far as I can tell it's impossible. I'm hyper vigilant on my squash picking off as many eggs as I can find. I dust them regularly and when I see the signs of a borer I do a little surgery to try and kill them. Unfortunately it seems no amount of preventative work can stop these beasts. I swatted a moth laying eggs on my plants last week then picked about 9 eggs off the plant. They're hard to find.

Okra will do fine this time of year if you have space.

Assuming you are in TX, not a lot. Tomatoes & Peppers do well in the heat but they would have needed to be planted atleast 2-3 months ago. Okra is one of the few (if not only) that would do ok being planted now. You can start on a fall garden in Aug/Sep.

Any ideas on why a lot of my tomatoes have seemed to drop blooms? I'm out in Midland, and was wondering if it was just the heat, but also curious if it could be something else.

My beefsteak tomatoes did really well in early spring setting fruit, finally harvesting some of that. And one of my cherry tomatoes did well early on and should have some to pick soon. Everything else isn't really setting much fruit. Keeps blooming, but most just fall off.

We've had quite a few days in 90s and 100s, but also some days still in the 80s. I've had a shade cloth over the garden any time the temp gets above 95*. I'm about to leave it up the rest of summer most likely.

You could try cucumbers if you can water them enough.

It's probably heat related. They don't tend to set fruit when temps get over 95 degrees.

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring. Dang Midland. The plants are doing great. They're over 4' tall and healthy, just can't get any fruit out of them.
