You might also check to see if that's really what's causing the trouble. Dig a couple of shovels and see if you find any grubs.

Tried that today and didn't find anything. The search for the culprit continues.

Sounds more like mole crickets to me. You might try 3in1.

This is probably the answer. Did some googling and these images match what I've got going on.

If you really want to murderize them, put out some bifen in your yard (not your garden). They're probably doing a number on your grass too. It has to be watered in.

I don't believe I've really given an update since starting this thread. I started a little later than you Houston folks being out in Midland. My garden's looking pretty good right now, everything's coming together nicely. This is my first year to have a garden, so this is how it started back on March 1st with newly laid drip lines and onion sets and carrot seeds planted.

My dad has his garden at home (Houston area) and bought too many beefsteak tomatoes. It was still early for me, but I chanced it and brought them home with me (otherwise he would've thrown them out). Had an empty wine barrel I threw them in. Luckily March had pretty mild weather this year. I tied into the irrigation and ran drip line to the wine barrel. Have quite a few baby tomatoes on there now, and a ton of blooms.

Main garden is really starting to take off. I've got 6 tomatoes ( 2 each of Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, and Sunrise Bumblebee Cherry) going on the left side. Most of them are getting their first blooms. Some marketmore 76 and Boston Pickling Cukes next to them. All of this will be trellised on the cattle panels shown. Along the bottom of the photo left to right are Cocozella squash, black beauty zucchini, and yellow straightneck squash. Along the right side of the picture are some eggplants, brown jalapenos, grande jalapenos and Clemson spineless okra. In the middle row is burgundy okra, eagle pass okra, bell peppers and banana peppers. Only 1 bell pepper has sprouted so far and I've got one banana pepper, so I bought some additional ones from the nursery that will be planted next week once I harden them off. Everything else I've grown from seed. All the cucumbers, peppers and okra are behind other plants in growth right now. You can see all the onions and carrots on the second and fourth rows of garden.

I left town today and won't return until Sunday, and we are about to get 4 straight days over 100*+ temps. I put up a shade cover while I'm gone to help protect the seedlings.

I wound up replacing 4 of my tomatoes so those new transplants aren't blooming or setting fruit. Four out of the five remaining seedlings I started in January are setting fruit now. I have one out of a dozen peppers setting fruit but about 50% are putting blossoms on now. My okra seedlings are finally sprouting with soil temps staying higher and the cucumbers are growing quickly. I also got spaghetti squash to sprout with warmer soil temps. Bush beans are growing well. All in all everything is performing as expected.

So far, we've picked about 2 dozen tomatillos between the 2 plants, a few peppers and a couple of Okra. Planted more beans and cucumbers in a better sun spot because my other ones aren't growing like I want.
my tomatillos just bloom and then the blooms fall to the ground after awhile. No fruit. And yes, I have two plants.

Could still be poor pollination. You can try hand pollinating them with a paintbrush your your fingers.

Our jungle is blowing up right now. Getting squash, cucumbers and a couple of peppers so far. Other plants have set some veggies but need to mature. Tomatoes are about half grown at this point. Should have 10 to 12ft vines in 30-40 days.

This is why I love this thread. I'm totally green to this (amateur gardener joke) and I wouldn't have thought that my pumpkins needed paintbrushes to have sex.

First thing tomorrow, I'm gonna stud some pumpkins.

Edit: Never mind, only got two boy flowers right now. I'll keep an eye out for the ladies.

We have some worm bins and make our own compost tea. It is amazing stuff for everything in the garden. I think the fresh castings make a big difference versus the dry ones.I add alfalfa cubes from our horse feed, unsulphered molasses and other stuff as needed. It is a great fertilizer and insecticide.

We love growing our own worms.

Just did a bin check and saw a bunch of baby worms.

Will probably split 1/2 the compost out into the garden and then add some dirt so the remaining worms can do their thing.

We give our squash and zucchini "handjobs" too. Helps to stack the odds. And corn too, come to think of it.

Thank you! Tiftuf Bermuda. It's starting to green up pretty well. Just aerated and fertilized it a week or so ago.

I was expecting you to say it was artificial turf. I am in midland and have been wanting tiftuff, but not sure I get enough sun. I'm between tiftuff and Zeon zoysia. Did you use a local company to lay sod?

Laid it myself a couple years ago. I needed 8 pallets worth, so it was cheaper for me to order from San Angelo and pay shipment than it was to buy local.

I don't think my wife finds it humorous when I tell her I'm fingering my plants.

Are you located in Texas? I thought worms couldn't survive temps over 80, so am curious what you do with them when it starts to warm up.

We are in Texas. We have them in our garage currently, located closest to the air conditioned space.

Next week or so, I'll move them indoors to our guest room

Potentially silly question, but any concerns with having them in the house? Do you put anything down on your floor first or change anything else?

Is that a clockwise or a counter-clockwise swirl. I prefer the clockwise, but it's not written in stone. Some folks use a pinch, but I find that a bit presumptuous.

Not really. They are in contained plastic box, with a tight fitting lid. I just keep them on a shelf.

I'd assume Japanese Beetles. They are brown looking little beetles - look like june bugs kind of. That's what always eats my beans.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
