Corn needs a decent size group of plants to pollinate. Or you can pollinate by hand.

I've had luck with everything germinating so far except for zucchini, bell peppers and banana peppers. Jalapeos and okra were slow, but eventually came up. Now I'm trying the paper towel method of germination. Hopefully I'll have some quick results there.

I'm hoping to plant my tomatoes, eggplant, and jalapeos on Sunday. Also one each of my burgundy okra, straightneck squash, cocozella squash and pickling cucumber. Still waiting on a couple other varieties of cucumber, okra and zucchini to germinate. It's getting up to 93* today, which I think may be too much of a shock, and then a cool front is passing through tomorrow. Sunday should be an overcast day with temps up into the low 70s, so I'm thinking that should be a great time to introduce the seedlings into their new home

Pro Tip

When thinning beet sprouts in your grow bag you should pinch them off and not pull them out. I've killed several of my beet sprouts. Those roots are to tender for my rough ways. I'll plant more once I see the damage. The carrots seems to take it better.

Planted two more blackberry and two more raspberry plants today. Also planted 2 apple trees. Seeds were planted indoors Tuesday, and should go out around April 15, our last freeze date.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Need some help guys!

I planted last week right before we got all the rain here in houston. After all the rain I used miracle grow to fertilize, notice I had some bugs so I used some seven dust (what's on the leaves in the pictures) . I'm starting to get these brown dead look on my leaves of my peppers and tomatoes. Is this some sort of fungus?

Astro,

I'm also in H town. I think you are OK. Looks like with some over watering or under watering. If you just planted last week could also be burned a little from the Miracle grow.

I just planted some of my seedlings yesterday. This morning I noticed my yellow straightneck squash's leaf is curling up on the edges. Any known issues? Just shock of transplant perhaps? I haven't noticed any bug issues yet. Hoping it's not a disease.

We only have 1 bed that's 20'x4'. This one bed produces much more than our family of 4 can eat. There's tomatoes (3 varieties), squash, zucchini, green beans, jalapeos and cucumbers. Everything is up and starting to take off. We just need some sun shine and a little rain to offset the public water for the plants.

When did you start the tomatoes? I'm in Cypress and making sure I'm not doing something wrong because
a) this is my first time and
b) your tomatoes are way bigger than mine.

Typically our tomato seeds are started in late January. Usually the end of 3rd week week of the month. The seeds are in their starter cups with artificial lighting in this approximate timeframe. I can't remember when we started these this year. I had to run back and forth to the farm in Arkansas too many times to remember the actual date.
No worries if your tomato plants are small right now. They will shoot up with this warm weather and rain in the forecast.

Been looking for horseradish starts. Havent found any local. Not a fan of buying online. Havent had good luck with buying plants online.

Tied up the canes of my blackberries and raspberries to coated wires with flagging. Should be much easier to pick berries. I picked this up from an orchard I went to.

Question about tomatoes

I typically plant indeterminates but got tired of plants growing 6 feet tall in my raised bed. This year I planted determinants.

Should I be pruning these at all?

You can "sucker" tomatoes once they reach 4 feet tall or so. Basically, where you see three branches starting to form past 4 feet, cut off two of them. It puts more growth into fruit rather than plant.

Yeah, I'm sure zooguy knows what he's talking about as the plant ages and gets big, but as of now I wouldn't prune at all, except for dead/dying branches. I've read that with determinate any pruning you do will reduce your crop, while for indeterminate they'll just continue to grow and produce.

He is right. I grow celebrities and have about 80 plants
my plants are always about 5-6 feet tall

I also start pulling suckers at the beginning but only after I see the first bloom then i am more selected on which suckers I pull

I pulled 13. 5 gallon buckets in one day. Craziest harvest i ever had last year

Yanked up a dozen little shrub bushes from when we bought our home 7 years ago and replace them all with dwarf bottle brushes for some color, and to hopefully attract hummingbirds.

We have 20 or so feet of privet woods (with some other oaks, etc) at the back of our property. There are blackberry and raspberry canes interspersed throughout. I'm going to dig some up and put in the garden. More free food!

That's what I thought but even what I call the dead end stems that are non bearing?

Thanks

I will give you a perfect example of suckers

If you have one kid you have more than enough food to feed them

But if you have 14 kids the food you had for one now has to be divided by 14

Now I really dont care if you do suckers or not bothe ideas work Just an example of why I do suckers and the fact that my 89 year old dad still has a garden and he does the suckers

do you have an opinion on what to do with oak tree suckers? ive read that cutting them only exacerbates the problem.

Those stems provide some shade to the fruit. Id leave them. I'd prune everything off the ground. Many folks prune up to the first set of blooms.

Here is an example of what I do. On the left is a Juliet indeterminate, on the right is a celebrity Semi determinate. Zoom in and you can see that the Juliet has one main stem.

I saw a guy burning them with a pear burner last week. The landscape around the tree was all gravel and river rock so he could do it without the worry of catching anything on fire.

I'm having an issue with up to five of my tomatoes right now. It looks like maybe aphids transfered a virus which is stunting some of them and causing the leaves/new growth to curl on what was one of the strongest plants I had growing this season. Any ideas? I'm going to watch them a couple more days but ultimately I'm probably going to destroy these plants and put new ones in. It's pretty frustrating since I started these from seed, got them going strong in the ground then gave away my backup seedling stock. I don't have any other tomato backups so I'll have to buy transplants somehow at the local nursery. The major irritant is I can't buy these varieties locally if at all.
