I think running a red dot certainly helped you get more hits.

Absolutely the red dot helped. I may try again with my CZ SP-01 if I can get back out.

I tried this over the weekend and did poorly, but I'm going to save my photos for the end of the month because I plan to try a few more times before then.

My range is only 20 yards, so I'm on easy mode, but 3.5 seconds felt like an eternity. Most of my shots were breaking around 2.5 seconds. Related: I scored very poorly. It's also going to get a lot harder when I swap the single action for a double.

Thanks for sharing results.

Glad people are finding some value in this one.

So I tried again today with iron sights and focused on hitting the par time.
Average 3.3 seconds, had 3 in the black. Had 2 more on paper just outside and 5 misses.
Much harder going for speed. I have more range time with the irons so sight picture acquisition was actually really decent, but my accuracy really dives if I pull the trigger faster than I'm used to.

On an unrelated note, I dropped my 6.5 creedmoor into a chasis and sighted it in with my new Riton optic....shot a .25 MOA group at 100 yards and a few other under 0.5. warching Shot after shot dang near go through the same hole was awesome. Now I need to get it out to longer range.

5/10.

I'll post video and thoughts later.

I need to slow down, most shots were in the ~2.6 sec range.

Wanted to shoot it again and see if I could do better, but that's not the point of this drill so I moved on to other things.

Video:

Slowest shot was about 3.1 seconds. Fastest was in the 2.4 range.

Unfortunately, the goal isn't "how fast can you fire a shot". My draw and presentation was good enough that I could have taken more time on sight alignment and trigger pull, which might have improved my results.

I'm going to try to slow down next time I shoot this, but I'm not too disappointed in 5/10 cold, with a double action compact 45.

So draw speed/presentation was there for me, just have to clean up the shot break. I'll be shooting this again at least one more time before the end of the month, but since it's meant as a cold drill....it'll have to wait for another trip to the range.

Not too shabby, honestly. 5/10 In the black, 9/10 inside the 8, with all on paper.

Shooting a full-size Sig 320 in a paddle holster OWB. Going to be my production gun for starting USPSA this year.

Need to get a timer, so don't have a time. All felt pretty quick though.

Apologize for my innocence. But 25 yards seems like a long way with a handgun. From a self defense standpoint, isn't that a distance you won't ever be shooting?

I get what Bender is going for here, basically modeling it after Jack Wilson from White Settlement. Sure this is much further than what most people shot normally, but there's always a chance that you might need to make a shot at.

But yes, from a normal self defense stand point I believe you're looking more at 7-10 yards.
I don't think Wilson's shot was 75'.

I recall around 30' and he was an expert.

Correct. I don't know if it was 30 feet, but I think I've read it was somewhere around 50 feet. Like you said, this challenge for the month is much further.

I stunk it up badly. Only two in the black, the first shot was 3.6 sec. shooting a Shield 9 safety model, AIWB drawing from under a jacket (I normally carry under PFG button up).

All that I really learned was that have no business taking that shot.I very much subscribe to the 7 yard rule, and practice as such with the Shield.

I used a B 16 target which is different the black is ~ 1/4" smaller in diameter.

Shot it again yesterday. Same basic result as the first time I shot it.

Which shouldn't surprise me, since I haven't done much work on dry fire or the range since the last time I shot it. I was able to slow down some, but most shots were still under 3 seconds.

If nothing else, it was a validation of how I did the first time. ~40-50% in the target area, ~90% on or damn near the 7 ring or better, one bad shot into the C zone (that still hit the target at least) on both attempts.

I think I'll keep shooting this one as the warm up cold drill when I get to the range for the rest of the year unless I'm specifically shooting a drill that wants you to run cold, both as a metric and because I think it's a good skills challenge.

A few questions:

1. Trigger press drills - any recommendations?

2. Drills like this and the church shooting - do they make anyone lean towards carrying with a red dot and "mid sized" (longer sight radius) handgun (G19, etc)?

3. If not red dot, any recommendations for hi-viz sights for faster acquisition?

I shot it today. 3/10. What's the easiest way to get a pic posted here now?

Practicing just on having a good grip with a straight back press of the trigger will help. Then par time holster drills with a first shot included. I'd recommend using snap caps if you're using a CZ since the firing pin retaining pin will wear out over time. Then progress to live fire. You should be able to find a time that is consistent and repeatable, and after awhile you can start pushing that slightly to shave a little bit off over time.

I can't emphasize this point enough though: practice how you plan to carry.

I mean I've carried anything from a full size 1911 to a Glock 19. I had a subcompact for awhile, but found that I had better recoil control with a midsize/compact gun and larger. To me personally I don't think that was the sight radius, but rather the larger grip and me being able to have a more efficient grip on the gun.

As to a red dot, nothing wrong with them. They're only going to get better and more cost efficient. But you well have to practice with which ever setup you choose since how you focus is different. Optics are going to be a hard target focus, where as irons are going to be a front sight focus *normally *. Different distances can have different acceptable sight pictures.

3. If not red dot, any recommendations for hi-viz sights for faster acquisition?

If you want to go irons, I'd recommend something like the Trijicon HD sights were the rear is blacked out/serated with tritium inserts and a front sight that has either an orange or airport fire truck green outline around tritium insert. There's also the Heine Straight 8 setup that I'm liking on my Dan Wesson Specialist, but I also have a similar setup to that on a Glock using the Vickers sight setup.

You could also just do a black out rear with a green fiber front sight.

There's no real right answer on this since everyone has a different preference.

First time at the range in 3 months. Could have been worse, I guess. I definitely can't go this long without shooting anymore.

My new P365 XL finally came today!

Looks like I've got basically a week to find somewhere that doesn't have 6' of snow/ice to shoot. Might just have to dig me a range...

Ben Stoegers book "Dryfire Reloaded".

Red dots are a huge advantage. They can absolutely make distance and speed shooting easier....IF the fundamental skills are there to back it up. If you're missing because of bad trigger press technique, the red dot isn't going to change that. A lot of people struggle when they start shooting red dots by trying to find the dot on the presentation. You can always tell, because they'll stand there doing the Elvis Pelvis with their wrists trying to find the dot and take forever to get the shot off. If you have good technique and are willing to put in the time to get a good presentation without hunting for the dot, dots are by far superior to irons.

I haven't shot one of my red dot guns lately. I should bust one out and see if I do any better on this drill with a dot.

I like red fiber optic front sights and solid black rear sights. I've shot night sights, "hi viz" type sights and everything in between, and prefer red front/black rear to everything else I've shot.

Also, a note: I haven't gotten anything sent out for December prizes yet.

I'm sorry about that, I was waiting on folks to get back to me so I could do it all at once, didn't hear back from everybody, went out of town, didn't get it done.

I'll get stuff in the mail/email this week for those who shot the December drill and reached out.

Has anyone on here tried any of the laser training aids? Like the ones you put in a laser "bullet" and shoot at a target sensor or your TV or something? (Understanding the need for absolutely ALL ammo to be locked away in my safe in the garage)

Just wondering if they are at all useful for dry fire practice, or if they are a total crock. It is several months out of the year where I struggle to find a place to shoot, wondering if this would help get me more dry reps (something I really need to learn to do better).

Shot the drill today. First time shooting my new Sig P365 XL.

I wanted to honor what was asked of the drill- cold start. So this was the very first 10 rounds down the tube. This was an intimidating drill, even more so with a short barrel and a unknown gun.

First shot was high right (pulled it), then the next 2 were low left. I wasn't getting a good purchase out of my holster (which isn't made for this gun, I've got a proper one on order). I was shooting at about 2.75-3 sec, rushing it. I settled in, slowed down a beat, and started getting a feel for the gun. 4 passes from the final 7 shots. A couple I could feel pulled right. I'm still searching for my grip a little bit. Definitely need more dry fire time with this gun, but I'm really happy with it so far. (Bottom couple rounds on the cardboard were from someone else later on).

4/10. That's OK I guess given the circumstances. I'm guessing the real value of this drill is the feedback shooting at 25 yards- revealing and amplifying flaws.

I wasn't able to get back to the range again. Or rather, I didn't make the time when I could have. I plan to keep using this one for a while. I'll probably make one more attempt with the Nighthawk and then switch to the P-07.

20 yards because that's the limit at my range. 4/10, with every shot under 2.5 seconds. I guess that means cadence and accuracy drills next month.

I ran the drill. I need to adjust my sights and practice slow is smooth.
I was under (just barely) time and managed to get a few on target. I think 6/10.

I went to the range today and tried to reshoot this drill with my Model 60, drawing from a sticky holster, appendix carry. My times were respectable: about a 2.9 average, but only once hit the paper at that range.

To make further embarrass myself, I actually dropped the gun, thank God it didn't go off, it was cocked, and landed on the hammer spur. I am recovering from a hand injury that affects the middle and ring finger on my right hand, I think when I pulled the hammer back, the spur hit the webbing of my thumb and those two weak fingers just released.
