I remember that device being used in one of the more milquetoast Brosnan-era Bond flicks. "Die another Day" or "Today is Never Yesterday" or something.

Not sure if anybody does this but on a long car drive, I would imagine a long ass saw that extends 50 ft from the side of the car and would chop down everything in its path as you're driving down the highway.

This is almost the same thing!

Our hunting group had a circular chainsaw blade on an echo trimmer that we called the whirling blade of death. It could cut brush like magic. No helocopter.

i always thought it would be a great idea to mount a couple of chain saws on either side of a ranch truck with a throttle in the cab. would make clearing back brush much quicker.

I wondered why he was going backwards, then realized it was to swing the saw out front where he could see it.

A friend used to fly Chinooks, and he mentioned that the hard part of sling loads was that the center of movement was not at the helicopter. It was somewhere along the cable between the chopper and the load. Depends on the relative weights and the length of the cable. So when that saw swings forward, it forces the helicopter backwards.

A simple case of physics, but I had not thought of it.

I'd say it only happens once per pilot.

I am surprised that no one asked how they are powering the blades

it looks like diesel/hydraulic unit hung from a cable to spin the blades hydraulically

The squirrels thought hawks were bad until that bad boy appeared in the sky.
