Had to brag a little on my boys, especially my 7 year old.

We recently gained access to a new fishing hole, my FIL purchased a new hay/cattle property. I volunteered to see if the bigger pond was stocked, and my boys were happy to help. Glad we did.

My 10 year old is a pretty good fisherman. He chooses his own bait, and does pretty well for a kid. My 7 year old is like any other 7 year old. He will fish for awhile, skip rocks for awhile, and goof off the rest of the time. He likes fishing, but usually is not as successful as me or my oldest, mostly due to attention span. He still has fun, just doesn't look at it as a competition. I think that changed yesterday morning.

We were getting close to the end of our fishing morning...it was 8 am and starting to heat up. I knew I had a chain saw and splitter waiting on me. I had already told the boys they had about a half hour and we needed to go. Everyone had already caught at least one, my oldest had probably banked 6-7, including a 4 pounder that was the big fish of the day....at the time. Weights are a guess, I didn't bring my scale and I'm not that good a guesser. My youngest asks me to tie something else on for him. He rummages in my box and finds a few random salt water assassins, and wanted to try one. He had a plastic worm hook already, so I told him it wasn't really the right setup, but he was welcome to try. So, he ended up with a Texas rigged salt water assassin. I was just happy to not switch to a spinner bait for the 5th time that morning. I told him he may not catch much, but he didn't care. Well, he drug this gal to the bank on the first cast, I'm guessing 5 lb, but pretty sure she was heavier than that:

Big brother pouted all the way home, but by the end of the day he was asking me to skip work and go fishing again....he didn't like being beat, but is ready for the challenge. Both big fish were released back to the pond.

Very cool! Love pond fishing. Always have a spot in me that wants a morning or evening around a stock pond catching bass.

How old when you boys got good with a bait cast reel?

My older boy is just now using a bait cast, and I still set it up for him every time he switches bait. It's a bumpy learning curve, but he got the hang of it pretty fast. My 7 year old is still a Zebco kid. But has tried the baitcast a few times....just needs more practice.

Bringing them up right. Good job Dad.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I used to be able to pond fish once in a while. It was great. I wish I could locate a place locally to take my son out. He loves to fish! Great job Dad!

He was singing that on the way home! "It's breakfast time, you 5 lb bass!"

Anywhere near the Longview/Tyler area?

Edit: Your profile says Round Rock, but if you get up this way, I don't mind taking guests fishing.

Thanks, Man. If we get over that way for a baseball tournament, we'll drop a line!

Curious as to the Assassin color combo he used? Pumpkinseed/chartreuse is my go to. Keepem fishing, they'll grow into good men.
I have very fond memories fishing with my Dad.

Way to go! He's going to remember that one for a long time.

This bit made me smile. I was a spinner bait fiend myself at that age. Chartreuse and white!

I'll have to check the color, the package is long gone. He picked it randomly out of an assortment of leftovers. I do remember it was a split tail shad with green and brown, but couldn't tell you the trade names.

Raise um up to hunt and fish and when they get older you won't have to fish around and hunt for them, you will know where they are.

Started mine on open face reels at around 6 years old. They are 17 and 21 now and are both very adapt with any kind of bait casting reels, and have been for a number of years.
