Could it be an ash? They are common in Texas.

Good call. Looks like black or mockernut hickory. I have a couple of mature trees but never have seen so many saplings.

Reminds me of the argument of two great trees in the forest, a Beech and a Birch. One day they're standing next to each other and taking survey of their kingdom, when the beech looks down on the forest floor and sees a young sapling sprouting up. "Well look at that" he says to the birch, that's a "son of a beech." The birch looks down and says "no, that's a son of a birch." They argue back and forth incessantly until a woodpecker happens along. The beech asks him "can you help us resolve this argument? I think that young sapling is a beech, and my friend thinks that's a birch. Can you fly down there, take a closer look, and tell us what it is?"

So the woodpecker flies down and drills into the sapling... tap, tap, tap.

He flies back up to the great trees. So the beech tree asks "that's a son of a beech, isn't it?"

"Nope" says the woodpecker.

"Aha, I knew it... it's a son of a birch" says the birch tree.

"Nope" says the woodpecker.

"Well what is it?" they both ask in unison.

"That....... is the best piece of ash I've ever had" says the woodpecker.

Ehhh not really... mexican buckeye is not a true buckeye and has leaves shaped more like a droopy walnut or even a little like that hickory above. I think you are thinking about red buckeye which does have leaves shaped like marijuana.

So, do Hickory trees grow in Paige (central Texas)?
My first guess was a Black Walnut.
