I hike Shenandoah a lot, I would guess the snakes are a timber rattler and rat snake.
Banded watersnake and yellow belly watersnake?
A quick google and it may be a juvenile and adult of similar or same species rat snakes.

Hah ...since it got started with the Monty Python reference above , about "getting better" from being turned into a newt.... I just continued it a bit.

Saw this thread this morning when it was still new and have opened it several times since.

Top snake is a plain bellied water snake. Bottom snake is a yellow bellied racer.
Whatever the black one truly is, it was the snake that made me realize that hiking established trails isn't truly being in nature.
I was hiking along the Potomac a few miles above great falls - between Frazier preserve and Seneca Park. The river has carved out side some canals that have made islands 20 feet or so from the shore. In the summer, water levels go down and sometimes you can walk over to them. So one time I did that, and it was cool. No trails, truly in the woods. Got about 100 yards in, and the path that I wanted to take was blocked by one of those guys. He was four or five feet long, and didn't give two ****s that I was there, he wasn't moving. There really wasn't a way around without a machete, so I decided to go back and got disoriented, took me about three times as long to get out as it did getting in. So yeah, I got blocked and lost in the span of 100 yards went I went off trail. Sad but true.

The snakes are a northern watersnake and a black ratsnake.
I was close!
Technically that is the red eft stage of the eastern newt on the bottom.

Sometimes I say lol when i didnt actually lol. In this case, I actually laughed out loud.
The common name of that millipede is Black and Red millipede (not joking). I think the family is actually Sigmoria

Sigmoria is a genus within the family Xystodesmidae.
