What the heck is this weird that was bug flying around my house? It looked like a cross between a mosquito hawk, mosquito, and fly on steroids.

Looks like a robber fly to me, also. I think they're a pretty cool bug. They are actually predators of other insects. They grab their prey and subdue them using the large barbs on their legs, then like a spider inject a paralyzing and enzyme chemical into the prey and suck the juices out. They are usually pretty loud as they fly around as well.
