Recently inherited a Mossberg 185K, bolt action 20 gauge.

I'd like for my son to be able to use it but I'm not sure if it's safe to fire.

I've cleaned it, everything cycles fine but are there some things I should look at or is taking it in to a gunsmith the smartest thing to do?

If it cycles and the firing pin operates the way it should when you pull the trigger, just about the only other thing you can look at will be the chamber and barrel. No cracks in the barrel and no pitting is good. If you don' thave anything that jumps out at you, should be no issue.

If you just aren't sure, take it to a gunsmith and pay the fee to have them run through it.

Nah, let her rip. My go-to shotgun is a Rem 11-48 from - I wanna say - appx 1953. Works great.

Only thing I can think of is a shotgun expert weighing in on whether you could/shouldn't shoot steel shot through it if you plan on him using it for duck, etc.

I thought about him using it on skeet since it's bolt action. The double station would be a little challenging

Also for turkey as well
