You all who are disappointed the product isn't stopping this recent swarm don't quite understand how it works. It is not a giant bug zapper that kills all the skeeters instantly. It takes some time and is in no way designed to stop this recent crazy hatch out. Give it two weeks and your yard will be much better than your neighbors that don't use it. It won't stop mosquitoes that blow in on the breeze, but it will keep your local population in check.

Put them up in April and had zero problems during the first half of the summer. Changed them out in late July but we've been getting HAMMERED by mosquitos over the last few weeks. We've gotten a ton of rain later this summer so I guess you could say it would be a lot worse if we didn't have them but they've been brutal this month. Moved into our current home in 2011 and this seems like the worst month we've ever had here, especially inside the house. If we opened a door at any point it seems like 5 would immediately fly inside.

After a decent amount of searching, i think ive figured it out. I dont quite have the concentrations figured out to exact amount, but its sugar, salt and yeast. The yeast eats the sugar to create CO2. The CO2 attracts adult mosquitoes. The mosquitoes decide the water is a sutible place to lay eggs. The salt the acts as a larvacide to kill the larvae or neutralize the eggs. Essentially this can be scaled up pretty easily.

Below is a link to a study explaining the thought process. Salt needs to be near 1.25%

My traps didn't do much of anything after the spring and that was replacing them on schedule and they weren't drying out. Skeeters were thick even with four traps on one half acre.

Bump. Seems like these things aren't as effective as previously thought? The mosquitos are already thick so I was wondering

The cap on the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator has small holes that, unfortunately, mosquitoes do not use. As a result the mosquitoes are not killed by the fluid inside. Actually, even if the mosquitoes did squeeze inside the fluid wouldn't kill them because mosquitoes are not stupid enough to drink the sugar/salt water. And even if there was an occasional stupid mosquito that did, it wouldn't likely kill it ... mosquitoes deal with salt all the time in the form of blood. They just excrete the salts in their urine after they bite us.

Anyway, the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator is designed to *seem* like it might be killing mosquitoes. Through confirmation bias and marketing there are now tens of thousands of people who are fully convinced the devices work. In reality the product doesn't work and, I suspect, the owners fully know that. They are getting rich.

Some governmental agencies are looking into revoking the ability of the company to sell the product. So if you swear by it, you should stock up fast.

My review in case anyone is interested in the details: https://colinpurrington.com/2019/08/spartan-mosquito-eradicator/.

If anyone has photographs of the contents of their Spartan Mosquito Eradicator, I'd love to see. https://colinpurrington.com/contact/

I hope the OB has stopped buying into this snake oil product. It absolutely does nothing.

They're definitely not working at my house.

On another note, we've had a fly explosion in Longview this year. I wonder if it could be in part due to the proliferation of these traps which could be growing fly larvae. Have others noticed increased fly populations this year? I'm talking at least 10x-20x as many as I've seen in past years.

In rice country. Lots of flies. Marginal mosquitoes, but seeing a flush since we got rain this week.

Spartan traps have never worked and I have never seen any control despite having tremendous numbers on a given year.

My goodness you are right. I clicked on that link expecting a google or amazon review. Holy smokes. The guy has waaaay too much time on his hands. Or looking at it another way....of all the causes in the world that need a dedicated champion/advocate/reformer, this is the topic he chooses to pursue with all his effort? I mean, there's the bloated federal budget and debt (14-16 trillion on the books debt, estimated 70-90 trillion off the books debt here in the US) genocide and AIDS epidemic in Africa, socialism run amuck in Venezuela, religious persecution in the Middle East and Asia, term limits for politicians, etc. etc. and he goes all in on the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator. Wowzers.

Any new solutions out there? Wife is convinced the Spartan thing works but bare to tell.

Bifenthrin and regular mowing of grass. Even if you have to make a rut, mow the grass.

Yep, I make the rounds with bifen once a month starting in early April through Sept and scarcely see a mosquito all summer.

Spartan eradicator doesn't seem to have worked for me.

This morning and evening I've sprayed the yard, bushes, trees with permethrin water spray. During the day I didn't have any mosquitos attacking me as I worked. Not sure if it was just a placebo but for example, day before yesterday I walked into the garage (door open) and within 30 seconds had a mosquito on me. Today I didn't have to smack any.
