I have a TX Concealed carry license. What does that allow me to do in New Mexico with regards to open or concealed carry? Honestly not interested in outright open carry but curious how they'd treat the rare occurance of printing?

New Mexico has a couple of weird laws. Can't carry two guns, some others I'm not remmebering off the top of my head.

Printing shouldn't be an issue, but check that site for any CHL related travel you do.

I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on the Internet. Investigate for yourself. But here's my two cents.

Pretty much, if you have a Texas LTC, you're good to go, open or concealed. Personally, I have never seen anyone carry openly.

But there are some weird things in NM.

For one thing, there are several government buildings and installations in NM. There are also lots of Indian Reservations, with their own laws. So be aware of where you are. For instance, anyone can drive through Los Alamos Labs on the state highway that goes through it. But you will go through guard gates, and they can search if they want.

Unless I misunderstand the laws, you can carry in National Parks. But not in government buildings, so you can't carry in the Visitor's Centers of NPs. Weird.

NM does not have 30.06 signs, so any "No guns allowed" sign is legal, I think.

The "51%" rule for restaurants in NM is 60% receipts from food, if the restaurant sells only beer and wine. This seems to imply that if the restaurant also sells margaritas, you can't carry. Seems pretty damn fuzzy to me.

The NM law regarding two guns is that you can't carry two concealed. One open carry and one concealed is acceptable.

Under a NM permit (not your Texas one) they permit by caliber. So if you qualify and permit with a .380, you could legally carry smaller (.22) but not larger (.45)

Here you go. I have found that most states have their CHL info on the State Attorney General or state police web sites. Here is the link to Newer Mexico's that includes multiple links including a FAQ:

http://www.dps.state.nm.us/index.php/nm-concealed-carry/

I am not familiar with Texas, but in my state the Attorney General office's website has a list of reciprocal states and even has copies of the letter from each state's Attorney General granting reciprocity. In the past I have printed those out and taken them with me when I travel to different states in case some local LEO is not familiar with their own state's reciprocity agreements, which honestly might be hard for them to remember or access quickly. Below is an example from Texas' Attorney General's office to Idaho's Attorney General granting reciprocity. If you travel to other states it is interesting to look up their CHL laws.

BTW, I was passing a few cars on a two lane in NM a few weeks back. Hammered it down toward the end as a no-passing zone was coming up. Sure enough, a NMHP guy flipped on his lights and stopped me. Was carrying, so handed him my DL as well as LTC, told him I wasn't sure of NM law, but I wanted to inform him I was carrying. He replied that NM law was the same as Texas.

He ended up just verbally warning me, no ticket. Was clocked at 83 in a 65. Don't know if he was at the end of his shift and didn't want to mess with it, or cut me slack because of the LTC. Win win in any case..

One more thing.... lots of bad sineage in NM. I've stayed in hotels that claimed they don't allow weapons. Ignored that, but don't carry in common areas unless to/from the room.

I've seen several stores (ABQ Walmart) that post the "cant carry in bars" sign, even though they only sold for off premise consumption, and you can carry.

I've also seen hotels associated with casinos that post "carry prohibited" signs, because you can't carry in casinos. My opinion is that such prohibition is bullcrap, as long as you go to/from your room, and stay out of the casino.

The worst was a hotel that was in a separate building, 200 yards from the casino, and they had a "can't carry here because we are a casino" sign. They since replaced it with a generic "no weapons allowed" sign, which is also bullcrap.

Also remember that NM does not have campus carry.
