Kansas hasn't ever done me wrong

I got to spend the last week in Kansas hunting with my dad, my cousin and another buddy. We had an absolute blast. The weather was freezing cold and deer were moving every day. We all 4 ended up getting a deer and made some memories to last a lifetime.

My buddy got the week started off right when he shot his very first deer, a big ol' gnarly 7 point. Excited doesn't begin to describe it. I think I might have been as excited as he was and the trip was worth it at this point.

The next few days were full of deer but nothing hit the ground. We hunted hard, we just didn't have anything to show for it except pictures.

Friday afternoon, around 5:20, everything changed. The next 10 minutes would involve 3 deer hitting the ground. Right at 5:20 I heard a gunshot from the direction my cousin was hunting and I texted my dad who was a few miles away to let him know. I put my phone down and looked up, only to see a good buck walk over the hill. Boom, deer #2 down. I get out of my stand and walk to my deer, check my phone and see that I've received a message that says " I just got a deer," from my dad. 10 minutes and 3 good deer, that's how it's supposed to work.

My deer.

All 3 deer. Me, my dad, and my cousin. My cousin's deer was his 2nd deer ever and is probably gonna measure out somewhere over 150 inches. He set the bar pretty high for his next one.

Replaying the moment he saw the deer fall....

Have you ever tried loading a small horse into the back of a tall truck? I definitely got cussed for taking pictures instead of helping.

Recovering and tagging dad's deer.

Heading back in the man cave for a little story telling time.

I would have been happy if one of us got a good deer, the fact that all 4 got one and the way it happened made this a trip to remember. Hunting with my family, seeing a good friend get his first deer and another get his first good deer, it couldn't have worked out any better. We've been home one day and have already started counting down till we leave next year!

You ever been to Kansas when you were not hunting? Opinion may change then.

BTW, super jealous of your trip. One day...

I'm jealous and a little disappointed in myself. I live here and haven't killed a deer this year and you traveled to kill 4. I guess I need to get on the ball before the season ends and get it done.

Nice work!
I count 8 on the first one, but I am generous.

I'm with you but he thought it sounded cooler as a "Big 7."

Family farm? Outfitter? What part of Kansas?

Congrats on the nice bucks.

We use a small outfitter near Moline, Kansas. We've been with the same guy for 5 years in a row and already booked again for next year. He's a good guy, has some good country and always takes care of us. He does have a few bowhunting spots open for next year if anyone is interested. Its definitely something every deer hunter needs to do at least once.

Congrats Blue Duck! Kansas whitetail hunting is the best.

I returned from family land outside Neodesha last night empty handed. After 19 sits with a bow and 3 sits with a rifle, I suppose I was just too picky this year...or maybe not hungry enough. We did get 4 big bruisers this year though.

I had to look up Moline, Kansas. Back when I was in my teens we also had land in Longton. Fantastic place for Whitetail deer.

I've been fortunate enough to bow hunt on friends family farm just NE of you in Coffey County for the last 8 years. Beautiful country. I spend 4 - 5 weeks throughout the year trying to figure out where to move stands, burn the CRP fields, and hunt.

Good on you. That is the absolute poorest county in the entire state. They need all that fancy Texas money they can get.

I can believe that. I love that place but as far as I can tell the median age of the area is somewhere around 70. I'm shocked at the amount of neat looking old, abandoned farmhouses, just wasting away to nothing.

There's just zero industry. A wind farm and one very nice/fancy hunting/sporting clays lodge (Flint Oak). Other than that there's simply nothing to do.

They got that fancy Casino in Mulvane now. That's all I remember fun from my time up there. When I lived in Ashland, the thing to do was go to Dodge City. And drink.

It always amazes me how the community turns out when someone shoots a good deer. Every single time we kill a deer there will be random members of the community just stop by to take a look and swap stories. The people all seem like great people. I also like the fact that the tornado siren goes off every day at noon. It just seems like a wholesome place.

The tornado siren at noon is how the preachers know to stop on Sunday morning. (At least it was in my little town.)

Topeka has 100K people and the siren goes off every day at noon. Nothing wholesome about this place.

Why? I guess we're more frugal over here we only test the sirens on the first Wednesday of every month.
