The Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife published this quiz on identifying wolves and coyotes. I got a 90 - some of them were pretty tricky.

Next quiz: retriever or mountain lion

I got an 90. Never been around wolf areas or even paid much attention to the actual difference from a coyote.

There were a few tricky ones, but overall the quiz is really helpful to learn what to look for. Going back and looking at the ones I missed with the help from the quiz is really helpful in identification.

They need to make that into a facebook quiz to get a lot more people looking at it.

19/20, the backlit one fooled me. Never seen a wolf in the wild, but have seen lots of coyotes.

Overthought one of them, the others were the young wolf and the one shedding. Never seen a wolf in person.

100%. Pretty easy. In addition to the heavier bone structure the wolves also have much coarser fur.

20/20.....the Oregon Furbearer program coordinator (wolves fall under him) was my TPWD officemate for 2 years.

I thought it was way easier than Montana's bear is test.

I've never seen a wolf before. I figured going in I would be happy with a B on this. Surprisingly I got a 100%.

Every time I had to think about it and take a second look, it was a wolf. If it was a coyote, I knew it instantly. I guess that makes sense having looked at coyotes my entire life and never seeing a wolf in person.

This is why the whole "I thought it was coyote" is usually bs. Generally speaking, the shooter is local and more often than not, a known local coyote hunter. They know damn well what they are shooting at.

Probably right. However, I imagine it's a lot harder when the canine isn't standing still in a nice close up photo. I know if I was ever in an area that had the potential for wolves and I was coyote hunting (which never happens anymore) I'm probably passing on a lot of shots unless I'm certain it is a yote.
