As I get close to completing my first ar build I'm curious what people prefer between a scope, red dot and holographic options.

I'll be shooting mainly steel targets and the occasional pig. I like the holographic sight I've used before because it allowed for easy sight picture while keeping my other eye open and able to see what else is around.

Bushnell or Tasco 3-9x scope would be perfect. Or a cheaper Vortex.

How far do you want to shoot?

I have a 1.5-5 vx3 and it's OK. If I had to do it again I would prefer a 2.5-10.

I can set targets up to almost 275 yards so that's as far as I would ever shoot.

1-6 sounds like a good option. Huge sight picture and it will allow you to easily keep both eyes open

Budget?

For budget I'd say no more than 400
Which may really limit my options just based on what I've seen online.

For under $400... look at...

Red dots:
Holosun red dot... multiple options... will run you from $149-$349 depending on the optic
Black Spider red dot... $149... imported by Spikes Tactical... I really like these

Both options can leave enough room for a magnifier if you want to go that route.


Magnified optics:
Primary Arms has a good 1-6x that you can get with mouth for under $400
Burris 332 - fixed power prism scope. REALLY like these. Mount included in the price

Eyeguy has the Rudolph 1-4x for $450. That's what I will be putting on the .223 Wylde I'm building. I know that's a little over your budget, but doubt you would regret spending the extra cash.

Specifically didn't mention that because of the budget but I LOVE that scope. 1-4x... Japanese glass... lighted reticle... front focal plane... amazing scope for the money.

Iron sights it is

I've discovered the glass game for AR's is a whole other world I didn't anticipate. It's a little overwhelming but spending an additional 50 wouldn't bother me at all.

I just mounted a $200 3-9x40 Bushnell Trophy on my AR. Haven't sighted it in yet. I plan to use it for hunting and plinking. Kinda went with the thought that this scope would meet my needs on an AR or longrifle.

Elaborate on which part? Sorry, just want to make sure my response makes sense

For scopes, Primary Arms 1-6x ACSS reticle or the Burris AR-332.

For red dots, Holosun from Orimary Arms with the ACSS reticle and a 3x magnifier, or the PA advanced micro dot without.

I really want to try Holosun's new holographic sight.

No love for the Vortex Strike Eagle?

I like the reticle on the PA better. Other than that and the lens coating they are the same scope.
