SAN ANTONIO As they patrol their Northwest Bexar County neighborhoods, a group of armed homeowners is putting criminals on notice.
..........
They suit up in body armor, carry rifles and communicate through radios. Their vehicles are marked with CDU signage. Bryan said the volunteers don't usually wear masks.

"Lord help you if we run into you," Bryan said. "Hopefully, if you're lucky, the cops will run into you before we will."

I predict they'll eventually have an encounter with someone that ends badly for all involved. If you wanna be a cop, join the local PD.

Also not smart of them to make a comment like this to the media. If they do end up killing someone, statements like this can and will be used against them.

Unfortunately this is probably correct. I wonder what the cops think about this?

This whole thing sounds like a terrible idea on their part.

They could probably hire a constable for what they're spending to "patrol" on their own

Thread so far seems to indicate the opposite.

It's always fun to see your disconnect from reality though.

I'm all for forming a crime deterrent group but this isn't the best way to do it. I would think:

  • Provide firearm education/CCL to your community
  • Provide Information to your neighbors of ways they can reduce crime
  • Create a database of external cameras in your neighborhood that might be useful for law enforcement (ie my neighborhood has two entrances and exits with a low volume of users. We set up two cameras that take pictures of all license plates that come and go).
  • Get to know your neighbors and meet regularly so you can talk about issues. I grill burgers once a month in the summer and have all the neighbors over.

While true, old west justice can also land you in prison. Or worse. Generally speaking I don't think it's a good idea to go out looking for trouble, which is exactly what these guys are doing.

More gems from that article...

"They suit up in body armor, carry rifles and communicate through radios. Their vehicles are marked with CDU signage."

"On a recent Sunday morning, about 10 men in three vehicles patrolled a handful of neighborhoods. Four guys walked on or near the sidewalk, someone in a car followed behind and a man in a pickup truck drove ahead of them as the scout unit. he other vehicle stopped by certain homes that have filled out paperwork with the group allowing volunteers to act as the homeowner, Bryan said."

"We do train people on felony arrest techniques and tactical handcuffing,"

"Statistics from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office show the two service areas that include the CDU's neighborhoods have actually seen an increase in crime."

These guys are a joke. They just don't know it.

""We do train people on felony arrest techniques and tactical handcuffing," Bryan said.

A citizen's arrest is legal when an individual witnesses a felony in progress."

FALSE! Restraining an individual without proper licensing is illegal!

Certain cities have a citizens patrol unit they authorize. Most, or probably all, would restrict the units from carrying any kind of firearms. Since I'm armed most of the time, I don't want to be in a position with a uniform on and not be armed, so I pass on these opportunities.

I think for one of these units to be successful, you need to form a security company and have everyone licensed as security guards.

I live in San Antonio. Saw this story last night and thought these guys were asking for trouble. I was reminded of a meeting I went to a few years ago where our neighborhood SAFFE officer was coordinating neighbors for the COP program. They basically told everyone what to look for and if they saw anything to call the cops. Do not intervene.

Most of the people there were just nosy neighbors looking for an excuse to peek in other people's backyards.

I'd love to sign up for one of the programs that allows citizens to write handicap and fire lane tickets. I believe the Precinct 5 Constable's office in Austin does it along with other agencies in DFW and Houston. There are too many larger issues for the police to deal with than these types of violations, but there's no way would I do a citizen's patrol, in a city owned vehicle that looks like a police car, without being able to carry some type of firearm and protect myself. Let the police be the police in those situations

Honestly, if I was a thief, I would love knowing these guys were around. There would observe for houses they interacted with. Pretty much a garuntee there would be a false sense of security. In fact, I'd probably get my own t-shirts made to imitate them.

If you're looking to steal guns, hit those houses. Next hit the houses where the cars out front have NRA stickers.
